Covarrubias building men's, women's teams

Four fall meets will precede conference, national events

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  -- Charting a course for Southwestern Assemblies of God University’s first-ever Cross Country season, both the men’s and women’s teams can begin developing their plan for this fall.

New Head Coach Jason Covarrubias will direct both teams, who will compete in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The league had eight colleges fielding teams last season. Oklahoma Baptist University won both the men’s and women’s conference championships. (See tournament results below)

SAGU’s former league, the Red River Athletic Conference, has two members, besides SAGU, moving to the Sooner; Texas Wesleyan University and Northwood University. Both placed in the top three in the RRAC meet.

Coach Covarrubias will lead the Lions and Lady Lions into four meets this fall, two in September and two more in October.

Their initial venue will be hosted in Abilene, Texas by McMurry University on Saturday, September 7. McMurry is from the NCAA’s Division 2 as well as the National Christian College Athletic Association.

Two weeks later, on Sept. 21, SAGU is slated to run in nearby Fort Worth in a meet hosted by Texas Wesleyan (NAIA).

Oklahoma Baptist (NAIA) welcomes a list of teams for their event in Shawnee, about 40 miles east of Oklahoma City, on Oct. 12.

The final tune-up for the Sooner Conference meet is the Mid-State Classic on Oct. 26. Southwestern College (NAIA) serves as the host for the event in Winfield, Kansas, which is 375 miles from Waxahachie.

A pair of post-season, national meets are arranged as team goals.

The NCCAA hosts their title event in Cedarville (near Dayton), Ohio on November 16, while the NAIA’s meet is on Nov. 23 in Lawrence, Kansas.

Since Covarrubias was hired, seven student-athletes have already committed. The SAGU athletic website will post announcements regarding recruits.
