Lions football earns first victory, 19-8

lions-heads-soloWAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  A very busy weekend for Southwestern Assemblies of God University witnessed the Cross Country teams in a meet scheduled for East Texas, the Volleyball squad playing three matches on the road, the men’s and women’s soccer teams in action as well as the football Lions playing in northeast Kansas.

The story on each team will be posted by Sunday night. Six of the eight events were out of town.

Here is a brief summary:

The Lady Lions played three different teams on the road in the Oklahoma City area. They swept St. Gregory’s University and Southwestern Christian University, 3-0, and dropped all three games to Southern Nazarene University.

SAGU put up a valiant fight against an Our Lady of the Lake University team that has a 7-1-1 record before losing 1-0. Team Lioness held the Saints scoreless until the 73rd minute.

The Lions were tied with unbeaten Our Lady of the Lake University, 1-1, in a well-played match at Lumpkins Stadium. A penalty kick in the 58th minute was the turning point in what became a 3-1 setback.

The eight-teams who were scheduled for the East Texas Invitational received a day off after the meet was cancelled due to inclement weather. Torrential rains on Thursday and Friday made the course unsafe for hundreds of runners.

The Lions picked up their first win of the season, 19-8, over Haskell University in Lawrence, Kansas. The defense forced five turnovers and held the run-oriented Indians to only 79 yards. Quarterback Reid Golson threw a pair of touchdown passes.
