WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  In weather best fit for ducks, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University baseball team swept a pair of games from Hillsdale College, 8-5 and 7-5, to cap a 3-1 opening weekend.

The Lions built identical 7-2 leads through five innings in both games, then staved off late rallies by the visiting Saints.

Skyler Gilstrap (Smithville, Tx / Smithville HS) was credited with the win in the first game today. He went four innings, allowing one run and four hits. Making the of his opportunities, Garrett Thomas (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) was the big hitter.

The second game saw Jacob Spivey (Georgetown, Tx / Harker Heights HS) relieve an injured Robert Elles (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) in the fourth. Spivey hurled 2.1 innings to grab the win.

A complete report will be posted on Sunday, along with box scores and action photos.

SAGU hosted Bacone College in a men's and women's basketball twinbill inside the Sheaffer Center.

The Lady Lions won their second game this week in a 77-68 defeat of Bacone, avenging an earlier 70-57 loss in Oklahoma. The team shot 48% in the first half to establish a 32-24 halftime lead.

Team Lioness placed four players in double-figures. SAGU is now 7-14 overall.  At 4-10 in the Red River Athletic Conference, the team has climbed into eighth place. The top eight qualify for berth in the conference tourney at the end of February.

The Lions led from start to finish in a 72-62 win over the Warriors. SAGU held Bacone to 30% shooting in the first half and built a 16-point lead with 9:54 left in the game.

SAGU grabbed 17 offensive boards and made less than 10 turnovers for the second game in a row.

Now 18-3 overall and 12-2 in the league, it was Southwestern's ninth consecutive triumph.

A review of the basketball games, along with statistics and photos, will be posted on Sunday.

SAGU will be back in action on Monday, January 28, when Langston University visits.
