Sophomore Cajun racks up three QB sacks for Lions

ford-up-close-mmWAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The Central States Football League has announced its Defensive Player of the Week is Harry Ford, defensive end for Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

A sophomore from Thibodaux (TIB-ah-doh), La (Thibodaux HS), registered four tackles; three of them quarterback sacks, in a 26-21 road victory over Wayland Baptist University.

Ford, 5’10 and 220 pounds, utilizes quickness and upper-body strength to get past offensive linemen.

The three tackles also cost the Pioneers 21 yards in losses.

He has 30 tackles on the season, 16 of them solo, but leads the Lions with 6.5 tackles for lost yardage.

Entering the game at Plainview, SAGU had only four sacks all season. They rose up and turned in a seven sack contest.

Ford sacked WBU's Josh Houghtaling, the Pioneers' starting signal caller, three times, twice on back-to-back possessions. The second knocked him out of the game.

Ford was also credited with forcing Houghtaling into an intentional grounding penalty.

SAGU totalled nine stops that went for negative yards, intercepted two passes and broke up four more. The host Pioneers completed only 9-of-28 passes.

The Lions rallied from a 14-3 deficit to earn their second straight win. SAGU is now 3-1 on the road.

Four of SAGU’s Top 10 tacklers are linemen, including Rodney Johnson (Detroit, Mi / Springfield Parkview HS), Isaac Caston (Dallas, Tx / A+ Academy) and Zach Jackson (Wray, Colo / Wray HS).

A year ago only one (Johnson) D-lineman cracked the team's Top 10 tacklers list. Ford had 3.5 sacks as a freshman.

SAGU (4-4) returns to the field on Saturday, November 9, when they travel (117 miles) to Tyler to face Texas College (1-7).

One more win in their final two games will give the Lions their first non-losing season in their brief history.

There will be no media coverage of the game.

Announcements will be made during the SAGU Classic basketball tournament on Saturday.
