SAGU splits twinbill with Cavaliers on Friday

Castro, Denton, Hornbeck support Pisors' 10-inning gem

(Detailed Report of  All Three Games Coming on Saturday Night)

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Southwestern Assemblies of God University split a thrilling doubleheader against St. Gregory’s University on Friday evening at the Waxahachie Sports Complex. Both games required extra innings.

The teams will play the rubber game today, Saturday, on campus. The first pitch is slated for high-noon.

Weather forecasters have listed temperatures to range from 58 to 63 degrees. There is 20% chance of scattered showers during the afternoon. Easterly winds of 11-13 mph are expected.

A detailed review of the entire series will be posted Saturday night.

The Lions won the opener on Friday, 3-2, in 10 innings.

Jarrod Pisors (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) was masterful. He went the distance to improve his record to 5-3. He allowed eleven hits, walked none and fanned six.

SAGU rallied from a two-run deficit with two in the sixth. A triple by Raul Castro (Garland, Tx / Hillsdale College) ignited the comeback.

In the bottom of the ninth it was another triple – this one by Jared Denton (Mission, Tx / Sharyland HS) that started the frame.

Two intentional walks later it was Preston Hornbeck (McKinney, Tx / McKinney HS, Hesston College) delivering the game-winner with a sharply hit single to rightfield.castro-raul-rf

SAGU missed a golden opportunity for a sweep when the Cavaliers, in arrears 7-4 in the seventh, rallied to knot the score. One inning later the guests broke the game open with four more to escape with an 11-7 triumph.

Two misplayed hits in centerfield were the difference as St. Greg’s came back from a pair of three-run holes; 3-0 and 7-4. SAGU pitchers hindered their cause by walking six batters.

SAGU had five players with two hits during a game in which both teams racked up a dozen. Bryant Threadgill (Whitewright, Tx/Whitewright HS, Dallas Christian College) had four runs batted in and Nick Sheffield (Maypearl, Tx / Maypearl HS) added two more.

Hayden Killebrew (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) pitched three shutout innings before an error in centerfield allowed two unearned runs to score in a four-run fourth.

Head Coach Sam Blackmon will likely send Pedro “Tres” Ortiz (Lorena, Tx / Lorena HS) to the hill for the third game of the series.

The left-hander has a 4.69 earned run average and three complete games. It will be his ninth start.

SAGU will be at home on Tuesday afternoon (4:00pm) when they host Ecclesia College (Ark) in a twinbill at the Waxahachie Sports Complex.
