Brendan Martinez pens Letter of Intent

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Southwestern Assemblies of God University inked a local player to this year’s baseball recruiting class. Brendan Martinez, from Fort Worth, hopes to be a real catch for the Lions.

A catcher, that is. The 5-foot-11 Martinez played at Timber Creek High School on the north side of Fort Worth, Texas. The new Class 5A school is in the Keller Independent School District.

Martinez has experience at catcher, pitcher and at both first and second base. He is a switch-hitter who throws right-handed.

The start-up Falcons team endured a bumpy campaign in the spring. His experience with the young team, where he was the starting catcher, could come in handy as SAGU is in the second year of a youth movement as well.

Robert Hightower, his coach on the club level, is credited with mentoring and impacting the development of Brendan’s baseball abilities.

Hightower cites leadership skills and a great hitter as the strengths Martinez will bring to the Lions.

Criminal Justice or the Medical Field are probable education and career directives for Martinez, who was on the A-B Honor Roll at Timber Creek.

Martinez was born in the seaside community of La Jolla, California, just north of San Diego.

Brendan is the second of four sons born to his parents, Doug and Michelle Martinez. Affectionately known as the “Killer Bees,” they are Bryce (24), Briant (22), Brendan, and Blaine (14).

Faith has played an integral part of his life, which has seen him serve at a Vacation Bible School on the volunteer staff. He also has helped at shelters for battered women.

The Lions went 14-34 in the spring with a 29-man roster that featured 25 underclassmen (17 freshmen, eight sophomores). After fall camp, which will last approximately six or seven weeks, the team resumes pre-season practices in January.

New Head Coach Sam Blackmon will release the team’s 2014 schedule later this fall.
