Outfielder hopes to be a 'rock' for SAGU

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Southwestern Assemblies of God University has announced the signing of Clay Gentle, a three-time All-District baseball player from Fredericksburg, Texas.

New Head Coach Sam Blackmon’s recruiting class has begun to take form. The team, which will have between 15 and 17 players returning from last year, will meet for fall camp with new players sometime in September.

Gentle, at 5-foot-9, played the outfield as well as shortstop and third base for Fredericksburg High School. With the Class 3A Battlin’ Billies (goats), he hit .353 in his senior season. He finished with a .375 career average. He also garnered Academic All-State honors.

Under Coach Todd Doucet, the Billies were District and Area champs during Gentle’s career, advancing to the regional finals once.

Doucet, whose team went 20-8 in Gentle’s junior season, said of the San Antonio native; “This kid can play! He will be a good addition at SAGU.”

Gentle also enjoyed success while suiting up for the Hill Country Buzz. His coach on the club team was Lavelle Morgan.

Fredericksburg (pop. 10,530) is 77 miles west of Austin. It shares many cultural characteristics with New Braunfels. The area is known for Enchanted Rock, a 1,825 foot tall pink granite rock formation.

Coach Blackmon hopes Gentle becomes a 'rock' in the Lions attack.

He plans to major in Physical Education. Church attendance plays a valuable part in his life, as does volunteer work in the community.

Clay is one of two sons to parents, Beau and Dawn Gentle. His brother Cole is 16.

SAGU is a dual member in both the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).

The Lions have joined the 11-team Sooner Athletic Conference, which is considered one of, if not the best league in the NAIA. After fall camp, SAGU resumes practices in January before the start of the season later in the month.
