RRAC lists Champions of Character

LSU-Shreveport rallies to win RRAC tourney

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The Red River Athletic Conference office in Waco announced its post-season honors on Monday, including the Champions of Character selections.

Southwestern Assemblies of God University is proud to list junior co-captain Jared Denton as the Lions’ representative on the Champions of Character team.

Denton, from the Rio Grande Valley city of Mission, Texas (pop. 79,000), the home of Tom Landry and the Ruby Red Grapefruit, graduated from Sharyland High School (Class 5A). It is a 485-miles from Mission to the SAGU campus.

“Jared has been a steady rock on this team when it comes to how he handles himself on and off the field,” asserted SAGU Head Coach Jon Shockley on Tuesday.

“His leadership has been a big part of this team,” he added, “and he has fulfilled his leadership duties with a servant attitude.”

“He has helped the team with feeding the homeless and participating in activities with youth who were in dire situations. We had a struggling season and he has been a strong backbone for this team.”

“We, the coaches, appreciate how he works towards being a Christian man with integrity at all times,” concluded Shockley.

Each team nominates a player who best represents the five core values of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), which are: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

The complete list of the other nine representatives is posted below.

Denton, the team’s top catcher, was forced to spend the season playing in the outfield due to injuries to other players on the team.

He is a six-foot right-hander who made just two errors in 46 games, most of them in leftfield.

He batted a stout .365, which placed him at No. 8 in the RRAC. Denton also belted 16 extra-base hits and drove in 33 runs. Both were team highs.

His slugging percentage was .513 (12th in RRAC).

All were career highs for the affable Denton, who takes practice as serious as he does game days.

He totes a three year, career batting average is .325.

Not a speed merchant, the athletic Denton was still successful on all five stolen base attempts, again, leading the team.

Denton shared the 2013 co-captaincy with fellow junior Nick Sheffield (Maypearl, Tx / Maypearl HS).  "The Chef" missed about two-thirds of the season due to injury.

The Lions off-season recruiting is underway. Fall camp will begin in September for returning players and newcomers.
