SAGU competes among 35-team field

Big race setting vs. ranked teams prepares Lion harriers

coach-jason-covarrubias-goldWAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  A week after winning the University of Dallas Invitational, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University men’s cross country team travels to Kansas in search of an encore.

Along with the women’s team, SAGU is entered in the NAIA Mid-States Classic on Saturday in Winfield, Kansas. Winfield is south of Wichita and 150 miles north of Oklahoma City.

The Lady Lions compete in the Mid-States 5K (5,000 meters or 3.1 miles) that begins at 10:15am.

Lion harriers are in the 8K race (4.9 miles) that commences at 11:00am.

The 35-team (list posted below), Mid-States Classic XC Race will be held on the grounds of the Winfield Veterans Home.

"This weekend has been highlighted on my calendar all season long,” said SAGU Head Coach Jason Covarrubias. “The field of competition is unbelievable and the atmosphere is what any runner lives for!”

“This meet has a 'nationals feel' and will be great for our young teams to experience. To have this opportunity three weeks before the NCCAA National Meet is great exposure.”

“The NAIA Mid-States Classic will allow us to see many nationally ranked teams,” Covarrubias added, “but also line up against most members of the Sooner (Athletic Conference)!”

The newest member of the expanding SAGU Athletic community has had an impressive inaugural fall season. Both have already qualified for a berth at the 40th Annual National Christian College Athletic Association Nationals. It is set for November 16 near Dayton, Ohio.

The team has also entered the Sooner Athletic Conference championship in Shawnee, Oklahoma in two weeks (Nov. 9).

“We look forward to good results on this fast course from both squads!"

Results of the meet will be posted on Sunday.
