Waxahachie, TX – Thursday, October 26, 2023 – On center stage of the SAGU Theatre Department stands Jacqueline Cabrera, a devoted theatre instructor and director who embodies SAGU’s commitment to excellence in education and Christian values. Professor Cabrera, an alumna of SAGU, has had a remarkable journey that brought her back to her alma mater, where she now nurtures budding talents in the theatre arts.

A recipient of the mascot scholarship in 2011, Cabrera initially came to SAGU as the beloved mascot, “Judah the Lion.” As she began pursuing her studies, it wasn’t clear which major she should pursue. “I lived off campus for the majority of my time at SAGU,” Cabrera explains. “My sophomore year, I joined the theatre department and really began to feel connected to SAGU.”

As that connection grew, Cabrera knew which major she would pursue. “I prayed about it, and God told me to pick theatre,” Cabera explains. Empowered by faith and love for the arts, she pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Education, guided by the encouraging mentorship of Professor Ronnie Blount,  her theatre instructor. When graduation rolled around, Cabrera promised herself one thing – that she would return to SAGU.

Post-graduation, Cabrera joined Life School, teaching middle school theatre and building the program from the ground up. Her dedication was recognized, and she soon became the head theatre director. In 2019, her UIL team made it to state for One Act Play, a testament to her exceptional directing skills.

As Cabrera developed professionally, she also pursued higher education, earning a Master of Arts in Theatre from the University of Houston, where her mentor, Mr. Blount, had also attended. This achievement further cemented her resolve to return to SAGU, a promise she fulfilled in 2023 when she was hired as SAGU’s Theatre Director.

Today, Cabrera finds joy in the unique opportunities and challenges of teaching at a university level. “The most surprising thing about this role at SAGU,” Cabrera confesses, “is that kids are so invested here. I have some really great, responsible students. I am excited to help and equip them to become the best teachers and educators they can be.”  Cabrera truly views her role as SAGU’s Theatre Director as a chance to give back to the institution that shaped her professionally and personally.

Under Cabrera’s leadership, the SAGU Theatre Department is set to stage “It’s a Wonderful Life” this Christmas. For more information, please visit the SAGU Theatre Linktree.

Additionally, SAGU Theatre is looking for program sponsors for advertisement in their show programs, starting in Spring 2024. Contact Jacqueline Cabrera at [email protected] with any questions.
