SAGU alumnus publishes book on church revitalizationWaxahachie, Texas — May 14, 2014 Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) alumnus and Senior Pastor of Copper Pointe Church (Albuquerque, NM) Galen Woodward published "Changing Church: It's Never Too Late" earlier this year.

After college, Pastor Woodward and his wife Kay began serving at a 75-year-old, traditional church in New Mexico. After 16 years of pastoring the church without seeing any growth, Woodward decided to revitalize his church's mission statement, congregation, and style. His book "Changing Church" chronicles his struggles and triumphs, and the paths he took to close the generation gap in his congregation.

"It was about three years ago that I started to journal the differences that we were making in our church," Woodward said. "One of the most significant changes we made was to shift our focus toward bringing more people to Christ. Very few salvations and baptisms were occuring, so I decided to remedy that."

In his book, Woodward emphasizes several alarming statistics about the Church: 95% of Christians have not led anyone to Christ, 87% of churches are declining in numbers, and only 6% of American teenagers attend church. He believes that this shows how the church has failed to reach the younger generation.

Woodward states in his book, "The Muslims have made a conscious effort to focus on training their young, and they are the fastest growing religion in the world. The Mormons have done the very same thing. . . Adversely, in the Protestant church, we seem to ignore our youth and certainly don't make them the focus of our interests. It's the reason we are declining in numbers."

"This is a real-life success story," Woodward shared. "What I really want this book to accomplish is to help and encourage pastors who are hurt, struggling, and unsure of how to disciple and grow their churches. I was there. I want them to know that they can overcome these struggles, too."
