SAGU Professor receives military awardWaxahachie, TexasApril 11, 2012Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) music instructor Tyrone Block was presented the Colonel Finley R. Hamilton Military Outstanding Musician Award on January 13, 2012. The National Band Association and John Philip Sousa Foundation presented Block with the award, recognizing his exceptional musical and leadership excellence.

“My motto has always been ’You always have to focus on the music. When you fail to do this, your instrument becomes an enigma decoding machine,”’ said Block. “It helps me keep the communication of music at the forefront, which allows the endless circle of music-making between performer and audience.”

The Colonel Finley R. Hamilton Military Outstanding Musician Award acknowledges musicians enlisted in the US Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. The award is bestowed in memory of Colonel Finley R. Hamilton, previous Commander and Conductor of the United States Army Field Band.

Block is SAGU's instrumental coordinator and director of the Concert Band, Pep Band and Jazz Ensemble. He also serves on the SAGU Teacher Education Committee.

Block currently serves as a staff sergeant in the 106th Army Band located in Little Rock, Arkansas. He directs the Rock Group 106 and Groove musical group. Block has previously served in the Navy as a member of the Atlantic Fleet Band and has traveled with the United States Navy Show Band.

Block received his B.A. in music performance from the University of Arkansas-Monticello, graduated first in his class from the Armed Forces School of Music, and received his Master of Music in performance with a related field in ethnomusicology from the University of North Texas (UNT). He is pursuing his Doctor of Music Arts at UNT.
