The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) football team visited Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, TX for their first Sooner Athletic Conference game of the year Saturday 9/15. SAGU has done nothing but dominated this matchup recently and continued this trend after a slow start.

The Pioneers got the ball first and Jerrell Peterson ran for a 49 yard touchdown to open the game, 7-0 WBU. Wayland stopped the Lions and scored on back to back possessions to give a big lead in the first quarter 17-0. Then SAGU CJ Collins sparked an almost perfect rest of the game scoring 54 straight points in every way possible, 7 touchdowns (offensively and defensively), 1 field goal and a safety in 46+ of game time. The Lions drove the ball 77 yards when Samuel Northey caught CJ Collins 8 yard touchdown pass to keep the game in reach at 17-7. Then the Pioneers looked to extend their lead when Tori Williams recovered a fumble for a 40 yard touchdown to give the Lions new life with them being down by 3, 17-14. The next two possessions looked promising, for both defenses as no one scored. The Lions had a booming kick to pin the Pioneers deep in their territory which lead to a safety and a new score of 17-16.CJ Collins then threw a perfect 53 yard pass to Jeremy Carr to give the Lions their first lead of the game with 12 seconds left in the half, 23-17 Lions.

In the 3rd quarter, Michael Bledsoe scored on a 5 yard run for his first touchdown of the season to extend their lead to 30-17. The next possession Wayland, unable to move the ball, tries to get a ball across the field but Devante Crownover was right there to pick Nick Quintero off for the second time of the day. Crownover was able to shack off the Pioneers and return for the Lions second defensive touchdown of the night, SAGU up big 37-13.

Their highest scoring quarter yet, Sam Northey and Tori Williams each had their second touchdowns of the day. Northeys came from a 39 yard pass from CJ Collins and Williams had his 2nd pick 6 of the night to finish off the Lion’s impressive night. SAGU is now sitting in 1st place in the Sooner Athletic Conference after their 54-23 win Saturday.

They will travel to face Langston University in Oklahoma next Saturday night for their game at 6 pm. Langston is 1-0 in conference with their win over Ottawa a week ago. The winner will propel themselves in a nice spot at the top of the standings. The Lions will have to stop Langston’s high powered offense after scoring 63 points and being number 1 in the nation for in that category.
