John Caraway, MSHRM

Prior to becoming an Adjunct Instructor, John F. Caraway served as the Regional Director of the Mid-Atlantic and South-Central Regions before retiring in May of 2019. Mr. Caraway began his career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1992 at FCI Jesup, Georgia, as a Correctional Officer. He held a variety of positions of increasing responsibility from Senior Officer Specialist, to Employee Services Specialist and Employee Services Manager, before being promoted to the position of Executive Assistant at FCI Tallahassee, Florida, in 2000. Mr. Caraway served as Associate Warden at FPC Duluth, Minnesota, and USP Canaan, Pennsylvania and then in 2008, Mr. Caraway was selected to serve as Deputy Assistant Director of the Human Resource Management Division in Washington, D.C. Mr. Caraway was appointed to the Senior Executive Service as Warden of FCI Cumberland, Maryland, in June 2010, and in September 2012, he was named Complex Warden at FCC Terre Haute, Indiana, the Bureau of Prison’s only Death Row Facility. In January 2015, Mr. Caraway assumed the position of Regional Director for the Mid-Atlantic Region. In January 2017, he was reassigned to the South-Central as the Regional Director. Mr. Caraway holds a degree in Aviation Technology from the Community College of the Air Force; an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Studies from Alpena Community College in Alpena, Michigan; a Bachelor of Science Degree in History from the University of New York; a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management through Troy State University and enrolled in the Ph.D. in Management for Walden University. Mr. Caraway has received numerous awards during his Bureau career including the Attorney General’s Award for Excellence in Administrative Support for his recruitment of minorities and women in hard to fill positions (1996); the Regional Director’s Award for the Southeast Region for his outstanding contribution to the Bureau of Prisons (2001); and the New Warden of the Year award (2011). Before joining the Bureau of Prisons, he served five years in the United States Air Force where he was decorated for his achievement during the Gulf War. Mr. Caraway is married to his wife Kim Caraway of 31 years and has a daughter Kamilla Caraway. He is a Credential Minister with the Assemblies of God and attends Life Church in Midlothian, Texas.
