Nate Gonzales joins Cross Country team

Incoming freshman hails from Dilley, Texas

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The trailblazing first season for the men’s cross country team at Southwestern Assemblies of God University saw the Lions sign their seventh team member on Sunday, July 14.

Head Coach Jason Covarrubias has announced the acquisition of student-athlete runner Nathaniel Gonzales. The graduate of Dilley High School signed his National Letter of Intent to enroll at SAGU and to join the first-year cross country team.

While running for Head Coach Victor Flores and the Dilley Wolves, he earned All-District Honorable Mention as well as the MVP award for DHS. He also garnered selection as an All-Tournament performer.

Highlights of Gonzales’ prep career included a second place finish in his Class 2A district mile while qualifying for regionals during all four years at Dilley. In his junior and senior seasons he advanced to qualify for the state meet.

The 5-foot-5 Gonzales also ran track. His success comprised qualification in the regional while running the two mile while also staking his claim to the district title in the pole vault.

His best times were a 4:48 mile, a 10:50 two-mile and a 16:56 in the 5K.

“We are excited about the addition of Nate to our young men's team,” Coach Covarrubias said. “It is getting late in the recruiting game, so it is rare to find a talent still available.”

“On his way to sign with a college (west of Fort Worth) who had offered him a scholarship,” Covarrubias said, retelling the story. “As he neared the campus he felt in his heart that it wasn’t where God wanted him to be.”

“He left and then pursued his first college of choice, SAGU, after he found out that we had begun a cross country team!”

He now becomes the seventh male member of the Lion harriers.

Dilley is a town of 3,674 that is 72 miles southwest of San Antonio. That is home to Gonzales and his family; parents Johnny and Andrea Gonzales. Nathan is the second of their four children; Justin (20), Bryan (15) and Amaris (11).

Gonzales, who was born in Carson, Colorado, is active in his home church. He participated in his youth group’s mission trip to New York City, serving with Operation Exodus.

The SAGU cross country teams (men and women) start their pre-season camp in August. Their first meet is on Saturday, September 7, in Abilene, Texas. McMurry University hosts the Bill Libby Invitational at Nelson Park.

The teams are slated to compete in three additional meets on Sept. 21, October 12 and 26. They will then battle in the Sooner Athletic Conference meet on November 9 in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
