Laura Lea Sims answered God’s call with a “yes”, and he led her to Arizona following her graduation from Asbury College (now Asbury University). She found great joy in his path for her, serving with World Gospel Mission as a teacher and counselor for Native American students in the Phoenix area. God flooded her heart with his great love as she poured her life into others.
Years later in 2011, a dream came true for her as she began teaching at American Indian College. Here she was able to share her passion for history, and God’s love for her students. She prayed with them, encouraged them, went to sporting events, and even kept in touch with many after they left school.
In the classroom, Laura Lea’s desire was to teach with competence, but also with humility and grace. Approaching the situation with sensitivity and respect, she welcomed difficult conversations because she depended on Christ to guide and help her with complicated topics. She prioritized time for students to share openly in class, and she treasured their comments and perspectives. “Ms. Sims” never wanted to lose an opportunity to be with her beloved students. She taught history, yes, but also discipled young hearts and minds – encouraging them in their relationship with Jesus.
Her love for others extended to her fellow faculty as well, and she cherished this “family” that surrounded her. This was Laura Lea’s great gift – to create family everywhere she went. Her joy and laughter were irresistible. Her love for others was sincere and deep. Her dedication to their lives was honest and true.
She found guidance and comfort in Psalm 143, verses 8 and 10:
“Show me the way I should go, for to You I lift up my soul.
Teach me to do Your good will….
May Your good Spirit lead me on level ground.”
Laura Lea died in an accident on her way to visit family on July 16, 2022. It is our
prayer that her great desire to encourage students and her deep love for them will
continue through this scholarship. In her own words, she encourages still –
“Go to God. Follow His path. He will guide you. Just take those steps.”
