Assemblies of God Classic Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s basketball Shepherd University

“We showed some rust from finals and the trip, but we will take that win.  We did some good things and we will look to build on that.  We also added Josh Swearingin and it was good to have him back.  We will need to play much better tomorrow night,” explains head coach Donnie Bostwick .

The game certainly got off to a slow start.  The first points didn’t come until more than four minutes into play after Keyunta Watkins made a lay-up for the Lions.  SAGU’s Darian Davis followed up with a three pointer to put the Lions up 5-0 with 15:00 left in the half.

Shepherd did take the lead for a short time around the 10 minute mark.  SAGU went on a run and by the end of the half they were back in the lead 35-27.

In the second half SAGU remained on top.  Their biggest lead of the night came with 0:28 left on the clock when Dominique Josephs extended SAGU’s lead to 15 points.

SAGU’s Keyunta Watkins led all-scorers with 18 points.  He also had four assists and two steals.  Freshmen Kennton Williams and Lance Tipton each scored 15 points.  Tipton also had 11 rebounds. Josh Swearingin also had 12 points in his first game back.

SAGU will play the 10-1 Vanguard University at 9:30 pm CST.  Vanguard lost their first game of the season on Thursday night to Evangel University.
