Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Women’s Basketball team returned home to the Sheaffer Center on Thursday night for the first time in two weeks. SAGU welcomed in Bacone College (BC) for their second meeting of the year. The Lady Lions (13-14, 7-12) were on top of their game against the Warriors (3-23) as they won in blowout fashion by the score of 80-60.

Lauren Baker scores 19 in win over BC

Top Performers

  • Lauren Baker ( FR/Lexington, KY ) led the Lady Lions in scoring with 19 points.
  • Kiara Glenn (JR/Ennis, TX)(15), Sydney Meador ( JR/Denton, TX )(14), and Lexi Rich ( SR/San Antonio, TX )(12), all scored in double figures for SAGU.
  • Alexis Casher ( JR/Irvington, AL ) and Tamera Derrough ( SO/Mansfield, TX ) led the Lady Lions in rebounding pulling down 9 boards each.
  • Rich also led the way in assists dishing out 8.
  • SAGU shot 42% (32-76) from the field including 27% (9-33) from behind the arc.
  • BC narrowly won the rebounding battle 47-45.

Lions Review

  • The offense for both teams was stagnant at the beginning of the game. Each team found themselves tied at 7-7 midway through the 1 st quarter.
  • The Lions hit three straight triples to take a 16-9 lead with 1:36 left in the quarter.
  • SAGU would hold an 18-14 advantage as they moved to the 2 nd quarter.
  • BC fell behind by double digits (30-14) thanks to a quick 12-0 run to open the period for SAGU.
  • A Glenn three-pointer gave the Lady Lions a 40-20 lead with just over three minutes to go before halftime.
  • Baker continued her stellar play as she hit back-to-back baskets to extend the lead to 47-22 at halftime.
  • The third quarter was tough for the Lady Lions from an offensive standpoint as they managed just 8 points. BC was able to cut the deficit to 55-37 moving into the final quarter.
  • Baker scored the first two Lions baskets to open the fourth quarter trying to energize the SAGU offense.
  • BC tried to apply pressure to get back in the game, but SAGU broke it easily and was able to score at will extending the lead 71-52 with 2:51 remaining.
  • Rich got going late scoring eight points in the last couple minutes pushing the Lady Lions to the 80-60 victory.

What’s Next

SAGU will finish up their regular season schedule as they host John Brown University on Saturday, February 29 th for Senior Day. The game will tip-off at approximately 2:00 pm with the Senior Day celebration being held prior to the Men’s Basketball game.
