Austin TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) continued its four-game series against Huston-Tillotson University (HTU). This time the Lions (15-5,0-0) were on the road against the Rams (6-9-1, 0-0). SAGU bounced back with two wins against HTU after dropping the first two. The Lions won the opener by the score of 2-0 and followed it up with a 10-1 blowout win.

Game 1

Top Performers

  • Augustin Martinez ( SR/Sugarland, TX ) was phenomenal on the mound for the Lions. He pitched 7 shutout innings allowing just 3 hits fanning 10 batters in the win.
  • Ryan Cole ( JR/Longview, TX ) had the only SAGU hit on the day and converted it into an RBI.
  • Ben Bills ( JR/York, PA ) walked twice, stole a base, and drove in a run.
  • Hunter Watson ( SO/Whitney, TX ) and Cole Yarbrough ( SO/Palmer, TX ) each scored a run for the Lions.

Lions Review

  • Martinez hit a batter in the bottom of the 1 st inning but escaped without allowing a hit.
  • Yarbrough walked, and Watson was hit by a pitch to put some pressure on the base pads. Cole promptly singled to left field which scored Yarbrough. Bills reached base on a bobbled catch which allowed Watson to come home. SAGU up 2-0 after three innings.
  • The teams would combine for just one hit over the next couple of innings as the scored remained 2-0 Lions.
  • The Lions manufactured baserunners at the top of the 6 th inning with two walks but couldn’t capitalize with any runs.
  • Martinez allowed one single and struck out two more batters to end the game and seal the win for the Lions.

Game 2

Top Performers

  • Dennis Smith ( JR/Jewett, TX ) got the win in the second game as he pitched 5.0 shutout innings allowing only three hits, walking two batters and striking out four batters.
  • Joseph Vazquez ( SO/Katy, TX ) led the Lions in runs scored with 3, but Cole and Watson were right behind him with 2 runs each.
  • Justin De Los Santos ( FR/Corpus Christi, TX ) led SAGU with 2 RBI, but the scoring was balanced as six other Lions had 1 RBI.
  • SAGU hit .200 as a squad

Lions Review

  • Kyle Coolidge ( SR/Newberry Park, CA ) knocked in Watson and Vazquez scored on a stolen base to start the Lions off on the right foot with a 2-0 lead moving into the bottom of the 1 st inning.
  • HTU threatened in the bottom of the 2 nd inning with two hits, but they couldn’t cut into the SAGU lead.
  • Vazquez doubled to right scoring Cole. Eric Crum ( FR/Kyle, TX ) singled to score another run and De Los Santos got a run in off of a sacrifice. In total, the Lions added 4 more runs to increase their lead to 6-0.
  • The next two innings featured no hits by either team.
  • Yarbrough reached base on a walk and then scored thanks to three-consecutive wild pitches. HTU hit two more batters and walked three others to help the Lions tack on 4 more runs as they took a commanding 10-0 lead.
  • HTU did get on the board in the bottom of the 7 th but it was too little too late as the Lions took the win 10-1.

What’s Next

SAGU will be back in action on Friday, February 28 th at 1:00 pm as they host a doubleheader against Wayland Baptist University. This will be the Lions first Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) series of the year.
