Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Softball team came home for the first time this season as they hosted Texas A&M Texarkana (TAMUT) in a doubleheader. The Lady Lions (2-7,0-0) lost both games against the Eagles (5-5, 0-0) by the score of 8-2 in the opener and 4-3 in the second game.

Game 1

Top Performers

  • Autumn Graham ( JR/ Flower Mound, TX ) was hit with the loss. She logged 5.0 innings, 7 hits, 7 earned runs 3 walks, and 1 strikeout.
  • SAGU hit .240 for the game
  • Alana Ortega ( FR/Houston, TX ) led the Lady Lions with 2 hits
  • Ashlyn Teran ( SO/Normangee, TX) and Brycelen Richards ( SO/Italy, TX ) each had 1 RBI.
  • Rosie Guadarrama ( JR/Cushing, TX ) and Haidyn Ransdell ( FR/Alvarado, TX ) each scored a run for the Lady Lions.

Lions Review

  • The Lady Lions found themselves behind 2-0 early after they gave up three hits including a double to left-center field that brought both TAMUT runs home.
  • SAGU found themselves in a tough spot once again in the top of the 2 nd inning as they gave up a walk and committed an error to put a couple of runners on. The Eagles tossed 4 more runs on the board after two doubles. TAMUT was up 6-0 moving into the bottom of the inning.
  • The Lady Lions weren’t able to do much offensively as they were hitless through three innings.
  • Ortega broke up any thoughts of a no-hitter in the bottom of the 4 th inning with a single to center field.
  • TAMUT tacked on another run in the 4 th inning.
  • SAGU finally got on the board thanks to an Ashlyn Teran single to left that scored Ransdell. Guadarrama scored via a sacrifice fly by Brycelen Richards.
  • SAGU trailed 7-2 moving into the 7 th inning, but TAMUT added one more run to take the game 8-2

Top Performers

  • Kassandra Vargas ( SO/Galena Park, TX ) pitched 5.0 inning gave up 7 hits, and 3 earned runs, walked only one batter while striking out 4 others.
  • SAGU hit .231 as a team.
  • Brycelen Richards led the Lady Lions with 2 hits.
  • Lauren Young ( FR/Llano, TX ), Cheyenne Fults ( SR/Waxahachie, TX ) and Richards all scored 1 run.
  • Morgan Valentino ( JR/Red Oak, TX ) led the Lady Lions with 2 RBI.

Lions Review

  • TAMUT continued scored in the opening inning thanks to three hits taking a 1-0 lead.
  • SAGU threatened in the bottom of the inning thanks to a hit and an error, but couldn’t tie or take the lead.
  • The Lady Lions allowed just 1 hit over the next three innings to keep the game close.
  • Valentino doubled to right scoring two and giving SAGU a 2-1 lead going into the 5 th inning.
  • The Eagles put up 2 more runs on 3 hits to take a 3-2 lead. SAGU tied the game 3-3 thanks to a single by Sarah Sanders ( FR/Hillsboro, TX )
  • Walks, hits, and errors led to the Lions surrendering the lead and ultimately the game 4-3.

What’s Next

SAGU will continue its homestand on Monday, February 24 th when they host Goshen (Ind.) for a doubleheader. The games are set to begin at 2:00 pm.
