Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Softball team welcomed in Sterling College (Kan.) (STER) for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Lions (4-9, 0-0) were able split with the Lady Warriors (3-7, 0-0). Sterling took the first game by the score of 2-0 and SAGU took the second game by the score of 3-1.

Game 1

Top Performers

  • Autumn Graham ( JR/Flower Mound, TX ) pitched a complete game allowing just 4 hits, and 1 earned run while striking out two batters. Unfortunately, the offense didn’t help her out as she was credited with the loss.
  • Brycelen Richards ( SO/Italy, TX ) led the Lady Lions with 2 hits. Morgan Valentino ( JR/Red Oak, TX ) and Sarah Sanders ( FR/Hillsboro, TX ) added a hit each to round out the offensive output for SAGU.
  • SAGU hit just .154 for the game.
  • There were a combined 13 runners left on base

Lions Review

  • Graham made short work of Sterling early needing only nine pitches to get through the first inning. The Lady Warriors answered back retiring the Lady Lions in order to keep the game tied at 0-0.
  • Sterling rallied with a double and a single to threaten in the 2 nd inning. They would later score on a batted ball back to the pitcher’s mound to take a 1-0 lead.
  • A single by Richards and a double by Valentino gave the Lady Lions two runners in scoring position, but they left the inning empty-handed.
  • The teams combined for just two hits over the next three innings.
  • SAGU gave up a walk and then committed an error which led to Sterling adding another run to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The last inning featured a hit by each team, but no runs as the Lady Warriors were victorious.

Game 2

Top Performers

  • Cheyenne Fults ( SR/Waxahachie, TX ) and Richards each had an RBI for the Lady Lions.
  • Rosie Guadarrama ( JR/Cushing, TX ) and Ashlyn Teran ( SO/Normangee, TX ) each had a hit and a run scored.
  • Kassandra Vargas ( SO/Galena Park, TX ) got the win for the Lady Lions pitching 7.0 innings, giving up 5 hits, 1 earned run, walking only one batter and striking out eight other batters.
  • SAGU hit just .174 for the game.
  • The teams were a little shaky defensively combining for 5 errors.

Lions Review

  • Sterling was in a good position to get a run across after a single and a SAGU error, but Vargas got a popout and strikeout to end the inning.
  • The Lions scored all 3 of their runs in the bottom of the first as they combined for 3 hits and were assisted by 2 Sterling errors. SAGU led 3-0 after one inning.
  • Vargas struck out three-straight Sterling batters to maintain the lead moving to the bottom of the 2 nd inning.
  • Sterling had runners in scoring position in the top of the third, but again Vargas got out of the jam.
  • The game remained 3-0 until the 6 th inning when Sterling started the inning with a double. They eventually got the runner in after a fielder’s choice.
  • The Lions were unable to add to their lead, but they didn’t need it as Vargas sat down the Lady Warriors in order one last time in the top of the 7 th inning to get the win.

What’s Next

SAGU will travel to New Mexico as they play the University of Southwest for a doubleheader on Friday, March 6 th . The first game will begin at 2:00 pm with the second contest starting at approximately 4:00 pm.
