Waxahachie, TX- Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) #13 ranked Men’s Basketball team welcomed in #9 ranked John Brown University (JBU) on Senior Day. The Lions (22-7, 13-7) were unable to avenge their earlier loss to the Golden Eagles (26-4, 17-3) but their Seniors, Darian Davis ( SR/Garland, TX ), Kentton Williams ( SR/Levelland, TX ), Mitchell McMullen ( SR/San Antonio, TX ), Darney Sims ( SR/Cedar Hill, TX ) and Terrance Hubby ( SR/Mansfield, TX ) brought it in their last home game of the regular season. The Lions ultimately fell to JBU in double overtime by the score of 71-68.

Kentton Williams scored 23 and had 11 rebounds in loss to JBU

Top Performers

  • Williams made his Senior Day a memorable one as he put together a double-double scoring 23 points and snagging 11 rebounds.
  • Mitch McMullen led the Lions with 4 assists.
  • Josh Kashila ( JR/Euless, TX )(19) and Howard Turner (FR/Detroit, MI) (11) were the only other Lions in double figures.
  • SAGU was tough on the glass winning the rebounding battle 46-40.
  • SAGU shot 34% (25-72) from the field including 20% (7-34) from deep.
  • The charity stripe was not kind to the Lions on this night as they were just 59% (11-19)

Lions Review

  • SAGU hit back to back triples to open the game with a 6-3 advantage.
  • A fastbreak dunk by Hubby got the crowd energized as the Lions trailed 16-11.
  • The Lions seemed to settle for the jumper early as JBU extended the lead 24-14.
  • JBU stayed hot from behind the arc has the lead 36-20 with 5:33 left before the half.
  • A 7-0 run before half allowed SAGU to trim the lead to single digit 36-27 at the half.
  • SAGU extended that run after the half with three quick baskets in the paint to trim it to a one-possession game at 36-33.
  • JBU came right back with a 7-0 run of their own to push the lead back to double-digits forcing SAGU to take a timeout 43-33 with 14:29 left.
  • Kashila converted an and-1 to cut the lead to eight, but JBU drained another triple to make it 49-38 with 10:22 left.
  • SAGU held the Golden Eagles scoreless for nearly five minutes as they chipped away at the lead. The Lions trailed 51-50 with 4:00 minutes left in regulation.
  • Kashila hit a huge triple to give the Lions a 55-54 lead, but JBU answered with yet another three of their own to snatch the lead back 57-55 with a minute and a half left.
  • Williams knocked down two massive free throws to tie the game at 57-57 with 1:09 to go in regulation.
  • Each team had a chance to win the game in their final possession by failed to convert as the game moved to overtime.
  • The game was tied at 59-59 as SAGU’s Davis went to the line for three free throws and could not convert on any of them as the game moved to a second overtime.
  • The team traded baskets in the second overtime, but JBU pulled by five 67-62. SAGU’s Turner tied the game at 67-67. Williams hit a basket to make it 69-68 JBU with 0:16 left. SAGU thought they got a turnover in the backcourt after a travel, but the Golden Eagles through it ahead for a go-ahead jam as they escaped with a 71-68.

SAGU will host Wayland Baptist University (WBU) in the opening round of the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) Tournament on Tuesday, March 3 rd at 7:00 pm.
