SAGU finishes season at 17-16
TYLER and MARSHALL, Texas -- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University women's volleyball team wrapped up the 2010 regular season on Saturday by sweeping Texas College in Tyler, then dropping a 3-0 decision to Wiley College in Marshall.
The split gave SAGU a 17-16 won-lost record in the regular season. Their 8-6 mark in the Red River Athletic Conference was good for fourth place. Next weekend they will be in Fort Worth for the RRAC tournament. They drew 5th place and tourney host, Texas Wesleyan, in a noon quarterfinal. Provided the Lady Lions can defeat TWU, they would advance to a 5:00pm semi-final match against regular season champion, the University of Texas at Brownsville.
Hudson ignites sweep of Lady Steers
Caitlyn Hudson (Mansfield, Tx / Legacy HS) had a standout performance to lead the Purple Pride to three straight wins in the best-of-five match against Texas College. The sophomore served for a season high 16 points and uncorked a pair of aces. She had 13 digs and hit .333. Hudson turned 15 swings into eight kills, while making just three attacking errors for a .333 percentage. Laura Espinoza (Duncanville, Tx / Duncanville HS) fired a pair of service aces.
Tina Brown (Seguin, Tx / Lifegate Christian) turned in an all-around floor game. She was perfect on 12-of-14 passes, had 11 digs, five assists, two aces, and jacked four kills during a .231 hitting effort.
Cisneros, Toole lead team in setback against Wiley
It was homecoming in Marshall, where Wiley College took all three games from Team Lioness. The past two years the matches there have gone the distance, so a 3-0 outcome was surprising, though Wiley is a very good team. The Wildcats took SAGU's best shot in the first set, winning late, 25-23. They won more handily in the next two, 25-14 and 25-15. Just a few weeks ago the Lady Lions topped Wiley in Waxahachie, 3-2.
In the hard-fought, shortcoming against Wiley, Krystal Cisneros (El Paso, Tx / Del Valle HS) drilled ten kills and hit .400. The junior added a pair of blocks, three digs and make contact with 18 balls as they cleared the net. Combined with her nine kills from the earlier match, she smoked 19 kills in 37 attempts. Brittani Toole (Whitehouse, Tx / Whitehouse HS) hit .290 against Wiley, racking up 12 kills. She had 18 spikes versus Texas College.
Jordan Briggs (Maypearl, Tx / Maypearl HS) collected 19 digs in the Wiley contest, giving her a total of 32 on Saturday. Taylor Calverley (Mansfield, Tx / Grace Prep) rebounded from the UTB match to post 30 assists in three matches versus Wiley. She had 42 helpers in the first match.
