Student applications to the university are surveyed by the Campus Nurse to determine health care needs that should be brought to the attention of food services personnel, directors of athletic activities, faculty, staff and/or administrators. A professional nurse serves the student body by utilizing resources to aid in meeting their health care needs on a part-time basis. The Campus Nurse maintains contact with a local physician who gives specific doctors orders to be carried out in the Student Health Care Office. Students are referred to other qualified health care personnel for medical consultation, diagnosis, and/or treatment as necessary. The Campus Nurse is available for consultation to all students living on-campus or off-campus.
Immunization Policy
The required immunizations for enrollment, and continuous enrollment in any Texas university or college by the state of Texas, are the following:
- An updated Tetanus Booster within 10 years of the current date; this is reviewed every year by the Health Services Office
- Two M/M/R immunizations
- A minimum of three Polio doses with at least one given after age 4 need to be listed for any student who is under age 19
In accordance with national law these immunizations must be up to date before the 30th day after registration. We ask that you get it taken care of ahead of time to avoid the headache once you are here.
It is highly recommended that students get both the Hepatitis A (2 series) and Hepatitis B (3 series) before they come to SAGU. This particularly applies to those students who may want to go on missions trips inside and outside the U.S., students doing inner city ministries and working with immigrants, students working as RA's or working closely with children and/or youth. The state may require the student to have them before working in public places. All of these immunizations are usually priced reasonably at state health departments for those 18 years and under, so we recommend that you get them now - before coming to SAGU. They also may be more reasonable at the family doctor and be covered by your family insurance (some insurance's only cover things like this done by the primary care physician). We offer occasional immunization clinics on campus for our student body. Students, faculty and staff can get flu shots when offered in the fall semester. We have referral information for immunizations that may be needed for some foreign missions trips along with immunizations that are nice to have, such as a meningitis immunization.
The Health Services Office provides general assessments, instructions and help for minor medical problems, and doctor referrals for students with insurance or non-insurance holders. We can help with dental referrals and can give health care referrals to most other facilities that students may require. The office has information on getting tested for illnesses such as Mono or TB at reasonable prices. We take vital signs, weights, and provide certain pieces of medical equipment such as crutches or ice packs.
Our office has several pamphlets available free of charge on subjects such as Stress, Aerobic Fitness/Exercise, Infectious Mononucleosis, etc. Other resources such as books are available to research medical conditions or a new prescription a student has. The Campus Nurse will also be available to research and answer questions pertaining to any medical query.
We recommend students bring their family insurance card or at least have a copy of the front and back of the card that can be easily read, to be used for doctor visits. Make sure you know the social security number of the person who is the primary holder of the policy. Contact the insurance company and find out if there is a specific doctor\health care provider your insurance company will accept charges from in this area (Zip Code: 75165). Get a list of the doctors that you can use. Some companies require you to get a referral from your primary doctor. If the insurance does not have coverage in Texas, it would be good to find out if extended coverage is available here. Sometimes it is necessary to take out a separate rider policy that will cover a student while they are out of their home state/area. The accident insurance that students get at registration covers incidents/accidents that happen only on campus! It is not a health care policy. Please feel free to fax insurance information to the school before the semester begins. Many times an emergency warrants a trip to the emergency room, which is why having your insurance papers/card readily accessible at all times is important.
