10-Game Winning Streak Lifts "Team Lioness"

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- The National Christian College Athletic Association headquarters released their weekly rankings of men's and women's college basketball teams, and Southwestern Assemblies of God University retained their #7 ranking in the Top Ten.

Using the Burbridge Power Rating system, where strength of schedule, classification of opponents, points for wins on the road, etc., the Lady Lions' 13-3 mark and 10-game winning streak kept them among the national leaders. They were in the same position a week ago.

The NCCAA has about 60 colleges as members, though their affiliations range from the NCAA to the NAIA, as well as the NCCAA and other organizations. SAGU, with 2,100 students enrolled, is in Division I of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Post-Season Options for Lady Lions: NAIA or NCCAA

Following the regular season, should the SAGU Lady Lions not earn a bid to the 32-team NAIA National Tournament (March 16-22), they could enter the field at the NCCAA's Central Regional. This year the event will be hosted by Colorado Christian University during March 10-12. CCU is based in the Denver suburb of Lakewood.

The region winner advances to the NCCAA Nationals, March 17-19, in Winona Lake, Indiana. Winona Lake is between South Bend and Fort Wayne. The city is also the headquarters for the Free Methodist Church. Grace College will serve as the host.

Last Year's NCCAA Nationals

Last year's NCCAA Champions were Bethel College, of Mishawaka, Indiana. The Lady Pilots are currently 13-8 under Head Coach Jody Martinez. Bethel was the #4 seed entering the tournament.

They topped #5 King College (Tenn) by a 72-53 count to advance to the semi-finals. There, they edged the #1 ranked Mount Vernon Nazarene (Oh), 70-68. In the finals BC routed #7 Ecclesia College (Ark), 74-56.

SAGU Seeks Encore in NAIA Tourney

Last March the Lady Lions were competing in the NAIA National Tournament, where they received their first-ever invitation. It was held in Jackson, Tennessee, where SAGU had the dubious task of playing the defending national champion Union University in their hometown of Jackson.

The Lady Bulldogs broke open a close game in the second half to eliminate the upstart Lady Lions. Union went on to win their second straight national crown. They are currently 17-0 and ranked #1 in the NAIA Coaches Poll.

Campbellsville University (Ky), a fellow NCCAA member, is #3 in the NAIA poll with a 14-2 ledger. They're at #2 in this week's NCCAA ratings.

RRAC Tournament, March 3-5

Should SAGU qualify for the Red River Athletic Conference tournament (March 3-5), held in Waxahachie, Texas, they could return to the NAIA tourney. To get there they would have to win two RRAC tourney games to advance to the finals.

First round games will be played at Waxahachie High School's Frank Solis Gymnasium. Rounds Two and Three will take place at SAGU's Sheaffer Full Life Center. Games played at the FLC will be broadcast via video streaming on March 4-5.
