You may be one of many adults desiring to pursue a college
education to keep up with changes in the work place, expand
your ministry opportunities, seek a career advancement, or
diversify your employment options. Seeking Experiential Learning
Credit (ELC) through Portfolio Development is an excellent
first step in your educational pursuit.
Southwestern recognizes that the knowledge, skills and
interests adult learners bring to the college experience
are very important, and often outweigh prior test or educational
performance. Through the development of a personal portfolio,
you have the opportunity for the learning associated with
your work and life experiences to be evaluated for University
credit. Your personal portfolio will serve as
a form of assessment to identify and describe your prior
learning experiences in light of the courses associated with
the degree you seek.
Development of your portfolio follows a prescribed format
designed to provide faculty evaluators with sufficient information
necessary for the assessment of your learning experiences.
The evaluators determine if the evidence provided in your
portfolio satisfies the learning requirements associated
with a specific course and/or degree program. If the evidence
contained in the portfolio is sufficient, credit is granted
and placed on your transcript.
If you are a Distance Education student seeking either a
Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree, you have
opportunity to earn up to 25 percent of your degree plan
(approximately 30 credit hours) through Portfolio Development.
Licensed and ordained ministers may seek Special Ministry
Credit. These options are not available to individuals seeking
education degrees, masters degrees, or associate degrees.
To pursue Portfolio Development, enroll in APS 3313 Portfolio
Development during the first semester you register for courses
at SAGU. This course guides you through the process of identifying
and documenting your prior learning experience.
