Waxahachie, Texas- January 9, 2016- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) women’s basketball team continue their roll with three wins in a row after topping University of Science & Arts-Oklahoma (USAO).  The Lady Lions topped the Lady Drovers, 50-45.

With the win over USAO (1-7 overall, 0-3 in the SAC), SAGU improves to 2-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) and 9-6 overall.  According to SAGU head coach Tiffany Phillips, at this point a win is a win, “It wasn’t very pretty, but it was a win.  In this conference we will take them any way we can get them.”

For the first half, SAGU held the lead all but one minute in the first quarter when USAO went up 5-4 with 2:49 to play.  By halftime, SAGU held the slim lead, 25-22.

Three minutes into the second half, USAO’s Mahogany Nelms made two free throws to put the Lady Drovers ahead 26-25.  USAO’s Nelms hit another basket, followed by a free throw from Jordan Williams .  With 6:01 left in the third, the Lady Drovers were up, 29-25.

SAGU’s Ebony Colbert hit a three to bring the score within one point.  Less than three minutes later, Colbert hit another three to take the lead back once and for all.

Coach Phillips credits the win to her team’s defense, “We held them to 45 points which is well below their average. Offensively, I think we struggled against their zone. We had good open looks that we just didn’t knock down consistently. We are going to have to start hitting those shots if teams are going to play us like that.”

SAGU junior Laken Ward scored 14 points and had nine rebounds.  Colbert had 11 points and two steals.

USAO’s Nelms scored 12 points for the Lady Drovers.

On Thursday, January 14, 2016, the Lady Lions will host St. Gregory’s University at 6pm.  SGU is currently 5-8 overall and 2-2 in the SAC.
