Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s soccer National Christian College Athletics Association’s Colorado Christian University

This was the third overtime game SAGU has played in this season.  The previous two overtimes resulted in a SAGU victory.  It was a Colorado Christian header late in the first overtime that propelled the Cougars over the Lions.

In the 16 th minute of play, a penalty inside the box gave CCU the chance to score with a penalty kick.  CCU’s Blake Goodale kicked a shot at the net, but SAGU goalkeeper Juan Solis made a diving catch.  CCU was able to get the rebound and send another shot that was ultimately blocked once again by Solis again.

The first half was quite even.  Each team got off six shots, but both went into halftime scoreless.

Early in the second half, SAGU’s Isai Bonilla s hot a header towards the goal but CCU’s Brandon Eide came up with the save.  CCU created more opportunities to score in the second half.  They were able to get off 12 shots compared to SAGU’s five.  Despite the looks, the game was 0-0 at the end of regulation.

Once in overtime, the Cougars out-shot the Lions 5-2.  With just over a minute left in the first overtime, CCU drew a foul outside the box, giving them a free kick.  CCU passed the ball into the box near the goal where Sam Walbearer was able to head the pass past Juan Solis and into the back of the net to give CCU the 1-0 win.

Goalkeeper Juan Solis had ten saves for the Lions. Isai Velasquez-Bonilla had four shots on goal while Danny Castro, Herberth Gomez, Antonio Silva, Jose Candelas and Bryan Callejas each had one SOG.

This Lions team made school history with the best start ever for a SAGU men’s soccer team.  They went 8-0-1 in the first half of the season.
