SAGU Offers New Degree in Religion and Philosophy Waxahachie, Texas – April 12, 2017 – Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) will be adding a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Philosophy this Fall.

Bruce Rosdahl, Department Head for Bible and Theology, says that a B.A. in Religion and Philosophy is a versatile undergraduate degree with a “strong philosophical component” – perfect for those interested in apologetics and critical thinking. The purpose of this degree is to help students engage their world from a thinking standpoint and prepare them for multiple graduate school options. The degree has attractive qualities for both vocational and para-church ministries which can benefit students interested in becoming a future lawyer or pastor.

Students will cover a broad span of topics such as “the problem of evil,” world religions, apologetics and critical thinking each semester. Students will be informed on how to identify logical fallacies and formulate and communicate cohesive ideas. Along with philosophical reasoning, the degree has strong components of theological and logical reasoning.

Apologetics will be an intensive focus of the degree program. Many of the classes are designed to prepare students for intellectual debate and conversation over a number of philosophical and theological subjects. Students will be taught critical thinking skills and will receive instruction in logic and persuasion.

The degree is well suited for those who are missions-minded. While the program is not focused on the practical aspects of missions, it will provide valuable tools for those who regularly interact with people of other belief systems and faiths. Classes addressing argumentation will instruct students in how to be “uncompromising but kind” as they address different schools of thought. These classes are intended to bolster the confidence and capability of Christians sharing and defending the faith.

Students of the Religion and Philosophy degree will have the opportunity to take classes from a range of Bible and Theology Professors including Dr. Jeff Magruder, Dr. Bruce Rosdahl, Peter Morgan and Michael Mitchell.
