New Summerfield, Texas – September 20, 2015- It was a stellar performance by the Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) cross country teams while competing at the East Texas Invitational.  Both the men’s and women’s teams qualified for the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Cross Country Championship in Houghton, NY.  And the men’s team took the top spot for the second time this season.

“These kids work hard daily and today was their day to get paid,” says head coach Jason Covarrubias , “They set a goal in Alpine this August that both team would represent SAGU at the NCCAAs and they put in the work to see that happen.”

Sophomore stand-out Destiny Garza dominated the 5K field by nearly a minute while setting a new personal record of 18:29.  The women met the qualification time for the NCCAA Championships with a team total of 111:08, blowing the qualification time of 119:59 out of the water.

The men’s team had four athletes in the top ten and all five runners in the top 15. Walker Loyd led the team coming in third place overall with a time of 28:13. Jerry Nava (28:36), Adrian Cedillo (29:20), and Gabriel Price (29:26) finished in 4th, 5th, and 7 th .  The men finished with 33 points, qualifying them to join the Lady Lions in New York for the third year in a row.

SAGU will take a few weeks off before heading to Mississippi College in Clinton, Ms. On October 9, 2015.
