Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s basketball Sooner Athletic Conference Texas Wesleyan University

TWU is currently ranked no. 20 in the NAIA and now has a record of 8-2.  SAGU is receiving votes in the national poll and is now 8-3.

The Rams dominated the game from early on.  Near the end of the first half they were leading by 20 points.

“We simply got whipped today,” says head coach Donnie Bostwick , “They shot 70 percent the first half, hitting 12 of 17 threes. Our defense was non-existent. We have no excuses. I have to do a better job of preparing us.”

SAGU’s Keyunta Watkins ended the half with a steal and a lay-up.  The Lions were trailing at halftime 59-45.

With 13:39 left in the game, TWU’s Ryan Harris hit a three to extend their lead to 28 which was the biggest margin of the night.  The Lions were able to mount a comeback and over the next ten minutes they were able to cut TWU’s lead to only seven.

Bostwick was happy with the second half surge, “I was proud of our effort coming back and cutting the game to seven points after digging ourselves a huge hole, but I am not into consolation or participation awards. They were better than us tonight and we have to learn to compete for 40 minutes.”

Four of SAGU’s starters scored in the double digits. Lance Tipton led with 23 points, Josh Williams added 15 points, Keyunta Watkins had 12 points and Kennton Williams added 11 points.  Watkins had four steals and 10 assists.  Josh Williams had eight rebounds.

TWU’s Dion Rogers had 23 points and seven rebounds.

For the rest of the month of December SAGU will only have two more games at the Holiday Classic hosted by Vanguard in Costa Mesa, California.  On Thursday, December 15, 2016 the Lions will play Shepard College at 5pm.  On Friday, December 16, SAGU will play Vanguard at 7:30pm.
