Chickasha, Oklahoma- January 30, 2016- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) women’s basketball team picked up another Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) win on the road after beating University of Science & Arts-Oklahoma (USAO), 58-53.  SAGU is now tied for third place in the SAC with a record of 6-4 and an overall record of 13-8.

“Again, we found a way to win on the road,” says head coach Tiffany Phillips , “I thought our defensive intensity was bad in the first half but we really turned it up in the 2nd half.  I am proud of the fight our ladies had tonight.”

SAGU jumped to the early lead against USAO. With 2:14 left in the first quarter, SAGU’s Charity Page made a basket to extend the Lions lead to 12-6.  The Lady Drover’s Brooke Worcester made four free-throws in a row, to bring the game within two points by the end of the first.

In the second quarter, USAO outscored SAGU 22-16.  Right before halftime, USAO’s Kiah Cummings made two free-throws to put the Lady Drovers ahead 32-28.

Although Phillips said her team didn’t play defense well in the first half, she says the second half was a different story, “We held them to six points in the third quarter and Ebony Colbert had some big baskets that brought us ahead. We have to learn to do a better job of getting out to a lead earlier and not digging a hole for ourselves.”

To start off the second half, SAGU’s Dy’Teesha Diggles made two baskets in a row to tie the score at 32.  From that point on, SAGU led for the remainder of the game.

“We are glad for the win but we won’t be satisfied. We know we have room for improvement and we have to do better in order to be contenders in this league.”

SAGU’s Taylor Hill and Charity Page led all-scoring with 17 points each.  Page also had eight rebounds. Ebony Colbert added nine points. Dy’Teesha Diggles had eight rebounds.

For USAO, Kiah Cummings scored 12 points.

SAGU has officially begun the second half of SAC play.  On Thursday, February 4, 2016 the Lady Lions will play at St. Gregory’s University at 6pm.  Earlier in the season, SAGU beat SGU 73-68.
