Named Defensive Player of the Week in his first game

howeth-jeff-nwmsu WAXAHACHIE, Texas  — The Central States Football League has announced that Southwestern Assemblies of God University ’s Jeff Howeth has been chosen the Defensive Player of the Week .

Playing in his first game since transferring from Northwest Missouri State University , the 6’0, 205 pound junior led both teams in tackles with eleven. Howeth made three solo stops and assisted on eight others.

He is a hybrid outside linebacker / weakside safety. Agile, physical and quick, Howeth is drawn to the ball like a moth to a flame.

Earning a start on Saturday against Oklahoma Baptist University , he helped the defense shutout the Bison in the second half while the offense scored three touchdowns in a 21-10 triumph.

Howeth, who wears the #26 jersey, had two tackles for lost yardage and also forced a fumble.

He appeared in 13 games as a sophomore at NWMSU. The NCAA Division II Bearcats went 10-3 a year ago.

He played his prep career at Highland Park High School in his hometown of Dallas, Texas.

The Scots are one of the state’s most storied football programs. His dad, Mark Howeth , is the Co-Defensive Coordinator at Highland Park.

Howeth is the second Lion to be honored by the CSFL this season. Wide Receiver Dylan Moore (Denton, Tx / Guyer HS) was nominated for his offensive production.

Two weeks ago in Lawrence, Kansas, QB Reid Golson (Grandview, Tx / Grandview HS, Howard Payne Univ) was chosen as the league’s Offensive Player of the Week .

SAGU (2-2 / 1-0 in CSFL) plays host to Langston University on Saturday, October 12. LU was the preseason pick to win the CSFL. Kickoff is at 2:00pm (CST).

The game will be aired in HD video by SAGU Sports Live . The pre-game show begins at 1:45pm.
