Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s soccer team Cesar Espana Coach Clem Oancea

For Coach Oancea, hiring Cesar was the best possible decision, “At SAGU we are always looking to develop a future generation of leaders in different fields.  This is a great opportunity for Cesar.  He has been a good, humble player and is always willing to learn and listen.  He deserves this chance and I’m happy to have him by my side.”

Espana graduated from SAGU in May of 2016 with a degree in Sports Management.  Within the next few weeks he will begin his master’s in Business Administration.

Espana played four years for the Lions and in his senior season he ranked no. eight in the NAIA in total saves with 119 for the season.  He also averaged over six saves per game, which ranks no. 20 in the NAIA.  In 2015, he was named as the Most Valuable Defensive Player for SAGU men’s Soccer.

Overseeing goalkeepers will be one of Espana’s duties.  “Throughout the four years of playing, I have grown a big passion for SAGU men’s soccer team,” explains Espana, “Improving the program was something that I always strived as a player and now I am very thankful that I have been given the opportunity to help Coach Clem as the assistant coach.”

On top of his impressive soccer knowledge, Espana has been stellar in the classroom.  He graduated Cum Laude with a 3.72 GPA.  If that is not difficult enough to achieve, it is interesting to add that Espana moved to the United States from El Salvador in 2008.  At that point he knew very little English and struggled in his first year of high school.  However in college, Espana has been named to the Sooner Athletic Conference Academic team multiple times.

SAGU will play an early-season game against Paul Quinn College on Monday, August 22, 2016.  After that, the Lions will next play Dallas Baptist University on Saturday, September 3, 2016.
