SAGU announces Fall 2011 University Scholars

University ScholarshipsWaxahachie, TX - June 6, 2011 - Southwestern Assemblies of God University awards its 2011 full-tuition University Scholarship to four freshman (in alphabetical order): Emily Jones (Flagstaff, AZ), Joseph Kendrick (Shreveport, LA), Emily Kuhn (Bee Cave, TX) and Nikayla Sadler (Arlington, TX).

SAGU’s University Scholarship is the highest level of four academic scholarships offered to incoming full-time students who have been selected based on academic qualifications as well as school, church and community activities. Incoming freshmen and new transfer students are eligible for the University Scholarship. Eligibility is based upon a quality point scale determined by the student’s GPA and SAT or ACT scores. Applicants must have 14 quality points or higher in addition to a resume, letter of recommendation and a personal essay.

Jones has served as the Morale Officer for her high school varsity choir and has been an active member in the Grand Canyon Youth Corps and Amnesty International. She was a member of the soccer team as well as the cross country and track and field teams. She has won the Dr. Voie Stuart Chase Coy Scholar Athlete Award for her academic achievement. Being a student leader in her youth worship team, she also volunteered at a local soup kitchen and as a children’s ministry intern. She plans to earn her bachelor’s degree in Church Ministry or Education.

Kendrick, a Saudi-born Eagle Scout, licensed pilot and certified scuba instructor, planned to attend the Air Force Academy until He felt God calling him to ministry. “My goal is not to get a degree in order to begin a career. It is to place myself under Godly instruction in order to become a more Godly minister. Bible College is training for ministry.” He volunteered with Community Renewal International, an after-school program for underprivileged children. He was heavily involved with his church, attended several missions trips and played drums and piano on the youth worship team. He was a Fine Arts participant from 2006-2009, winning State Awards of Merit for Christian Band, Worship Team, Short Sermon, Percussion Solo and a National Superior in Christian Band.

Kuhn served in her high school’s volunteer program, CAVS In Service and as an officer and student advisor for Lake Travis’ Future Farmers of America. Along with her active involvement in varsity choir, she served on the Sunday morning and youth worship bands. She also served as the Assistant Children’s Pastor. She plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.

In addition to writing for her school paper, Sadler was actively involved in choir, ballet, piano and ice skating. She volunteered with her church’s children’s ministry, played in the worship band, and participated in missions trips. For the past five years, she owned her own handmade jewelry business. On why she chose a Christian university over a secular institution, Sadler explained, “The campus weekend (visit) convinced me. I was impressed by the freedom of worship, the expectancy for God’s presence, the inclusion of prayer in classes, and the priority placed on Bible training.” After graduation, she hopes to participate in foreign missions, teach, perform musically, and eventually become a published author.
