SAGU Students to Serve Community Through "Lions at Work" Event

On Tuesday, August 31, SAGU students will be participating in “Lions at Work” to reach out to the surrounding communities. The event is part of New Student Orientation. In addition to serving the community and representing SAGU, the outreach will teach incoming freshman the importance of serving and volunteering in the community. Approximately 350 SAGU students are expected to participate in the event, which will include various locations in Waxahachie and surrounding cities.

The event will begin with a seminar, which will include presentations from Salvation Army, Boys and Girls Club, and Meals on Wheels on opportunities for regular involvement. Students will then disperse to eighteen locations in Waxahachie, Lancaster, Desoto, Red Oak, Ennis, and Midlothian for various community service projects.

Students are working primarily with churches, but are also in places such as nursing/assisted living homes and food banks. Volunteers will be cleaning facilities, doing yard work, organizing storage rooms, painting rooms, passing out fliers, doing some office work, and running routes for Meals on Wheels. The volunteers’ workday will conclude with lunch provided by Chick-fil-a and Aramark.

Approximately 250 freshman will team up with some of SAGU’s returning students for the event. Incoming freshman will also write a reflection paper regarding their involvement in the event.

According to the Student Success office, “Our goal in the ‘Lions at Work’ outreach is that our students would actually find a place to volunteer on a regular basis. Our goal is that they would learn the importance of serving, as Christ served. Next we would like SAGU to be more widely known, to better communicate and connect with the town. We would like to join hands with the city and touch lives for the sake of Christ.”
