SAGU offers scuba diving classesWaxahachie, Texas — March 5, 2013 — Southern Star Scuba hosts scuba diving lessons every Tuesday in Southwestern Assemblies of God University's (SAGU) Garrison Wellness Center (GWC). The classes are open to the SAGU campus and the public.

Classes begin in the Teeter Hall meeting room for the teaching portion and conclude in the GWC pool for the diving portion. The course lasts ten weeks and ends with an open-water dive in West Texas.

GWC Director Kelli Hill said, "I think it is exciting for us to be able to offer the scuba class, and we hope to eventually offer the class as a PE credit from the university."

At the beginning of each semester, the class offers a free demonstration where participants can try out the equipment in the water. Southern Star Scuba provides rental equipment for those taking classes.

Southern Star Scuba was established under DaSal Inc., which is owned and operated by Dave and Sally Wheeler. They offer open-water, private, semi-private, group and special group diving lessons.

Dave has 46 years of worldwide diving experience through the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), National Association of Scuba Diving Schools (NASDS), and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), where he is a master scuba diver trainer. Dave teaches 12 specialty courses as well as Emergency First Responder (EFR) courses.

Dave said, "Scuba diving is an extremely safe and easy sport. It only takes a little bit of knowledge. We always maintain a safe student-instructor ratio, and our students learn the different environmental rules so they can experience the underwater environment safely."

He continued, "The weightlessness you feel is the closest thing to flying. There is nothing like God's beautiful underwater creation."

Dave is assisted by PADI Instructors Carl and Penny Fortune. With this credential they are able to certify students to become assistant instructors. The Fortunes are both EFR instructors teaching CPR, First Aid, and AED.

Carl commented, "There is nothing more important than safety. Our classes teach students not only how to dive safely but how to help others without risking their own safety, if the need arises."
