SAGU kicks off the '12-'13 year during Welcome Week
Waxahachie, Texas — September 5, 2012 — On Saturday, August 25, new Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions moved into their dorm rooms. During Welcome Week both incoming and returning students participated in a variety of activities, including New Student Orientation (NSO), Mugged 2012, the Church and Business Expo, and Battle of the Dorms.
SAGU requires all new students to attend and participate in New Student Orientation (NSO) and the Strategies for Student Success (S3) course during their first semester at SAGU. S3 helps new students acclimate to the university environment, teaches study skills, and informs students of operations and resources.
NSO prepares students for academic success and connects them to other students, faculty and staff. Students participate in activities such as Orientation Kickoff, group breakouts, a Night at the GU, the Lion's Fair, a pep rally and Late Night Worship.
SAGU launched a new tradition Tuesday, August 28. Alumni Relations hosted Mugged 2012, a special event to welcome students to campus. Students were given SAGU mugs to personalize that can be used throughout the year for discounted refills at the Lions Den. The event also provided an opportunity for students to connect with the Alumni Relations office.
Career Services sponsored the Church and Business Expo on Friday, August 31. The event provides an opportunity for churches and employers to meet with students to promote their services and employment, volunteer and internship opportunities.
On Saturday, September 1, students gathered to participate in the annual Battle of the Dorms. Each dorm is assigned a color, and students are encouraged to dress in their dorm's color. The competition included tug of war, Ultimate Frisbee, sand volleyball and a human pyramid race.
The first, second and third place winners and each competition winners were awarded points. At the end of the event, the point totals for each dorm were tallied and the top-scoring dorm was awarded the golden Dorm Champ Vacuum. The golden Spirit Vacuum is awarded to the dorm that exhibits the most spirit. This year, Collins Hall won the Dorm Champ Vacuum, and Savell was awarded the Spirit Vacuum.
