Red Oak Elementary students visit SAGU

Red Oak Elementary students visit SAGUWaxahachie, TexasApril 10, 2012Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) welcomed 100 second-graders from Red Oak Elementary School for a field trip and miniature sports camp on Thursday, April 5.

The second grade students of Red Oak Elementary visited SAGU to experience college life. Students began their day with a tour of Bridges Residence Hall and the Garrison Wellness Center, during which the children expressed their excitement to experience the “college life” on their own.

“Our students at Red Oak Elementary absolutely loved their visit to SAGU. The students felt like they were real college students for the day,” said Red Oak teacher and SAGU alumna April Eide. "They especially enjoyed touring the campus, seeing the dorm rooms and wellness center, and learning why it’s important to attend college.

The children also participated in a sports camp. Students were split into groups and rotated between sport games with SAGU athletes from the football, basketball, soccer and volleyball teams.

After a day full of activity, the second-graders enjoyed a pizza party in the newly remodeled cafeteria. SAGU Admissions Counselor Ashleigh O’Connor led a presentation highlighting the importance of a college education. The students were then given the opportunity to ask questions about the career options a college education allowed, academic requirements for acceptance and scholarship opportunities offered.

“As the SAGU Registrar and as a parent of Red Oak students, I love that the students got to visit our campus,” said Heather Francis. “The kids asked great questions about what it’s like to be in college and why they should go to college.”

“It was a great opportunity for SAGU to show them what’s available for them in their future.”

“The kids left SAGU with a positive memory and excitement to continue their education past high school,” said Eide. “Several of the kids said that before today they thought they would never go to college, but now want to more than anything."
