ARMS BOOST: New Head Coach Mandy Fortner stands next to Kristina Armbrust (27), who will compete for playing time as a defender.WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Mandy Fortner continues to build up the Lady Lions roster at Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

Heading into her first season as the women’s soccer team’s head coach, Fortner has been hard at work on the recruiting trail. Her most recent acquisition is Kristina Armbrust, a 5-foot-8 defender.

She has real good size and strength,” the former college All-American, Fortner, said of Armbrust. The transfer from Dallas’ Christ For the Nations Institute was secured on the promise of her potential. She is developing defensive skills to be ready for the rigors of college competition.

SAGU plays in the Red River Athletic Conference. All ten RRAC teams are Division I members in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, which had 219 teams last fall.

She’s progressing,” Coach Fortner pointed out. “Kristina working out and is learning fast. That kind of desire could serve her well.

Armbrust, who was born in Gretna, Nebraska, is playing actively on both outdoor and indoor teams.

SAGU will begin their season with a home match against Wayland Baptist University, 2-15-0 last year, on August 20. The Lady Pioneers play in the 12-team Sooner Athletic Conference.
