Club continues to show gritty, competitive spirit

Pitching staff proving the mettle with a 4.88 ERA

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The rebuilding baseball team at Southwestern Assemblies of God University continues their climb on Tuesday when they take on NCAA D II McMurry University in Abilene, Texas.

The Warhawks, members in the Heartland Conference, are 5-12. Walt Driggers Field is the site of the nine inning game, which begins at 5:00pm.

Fans can follow the action in livestream video as well as the play-by-play on Livestats.

The Hawks, who, like SAGU, have a dual membership that includes the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), is batting .245 and are scoring 3.6 runs per game. McMurry’s pitching staff has a 4.31 earned run average.

It contrasts with the Lions’ .290 BA, 4.8 runs per outing and 4.88 ERA. The pitching staff's most revealing number ranks fifth in the 10-team Sooner Athletic Conference.

The pitching staff has exhibited a gutsy resolve that keeps them competitive.

A year ago the Lions had an 8.11. This year's current figure is even lower than the 2012 team's 5.27, which was SAGU's best in years. The 2006 team, which went 20-22-1, had a 5.34 ERA.

Through 23 games the Lions have outscored their opponents; 114-112.

SAGU has an important three-game series next weekend at Mid-America Christian University (4-10 / 2-3 in SAC); Head Coach Sam Blackmon will probably use Tuesday’s game to tune-up for MACU.

Having six different pitchers earn starts, the Lions might send sophomore Hayden Killebrew (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) to the hill. He is 1-0 with a 2.63 ERA.

In his last effort, Killebrew went three innings against Wayland Baptist University. He was touched for two unearned runs.

Several other arms may make appearances.killebrew-2013

The Lions are 10-13 overall and are 1-5 in the SAC.

SAGU split a twinbill on Thursday at N0. 20 Texas Wesleyan University before dropping the finale, 7-1, on campus on Friday afternoon.

The game was tied 1-1 through three innings.

Eric Hagstrom (Universal City, Tx / Lubbock Chr ) ripped a line drive down the leftfield line for a double. He took third when Dej Mathis (Wister, Ok / Wister HS, Bacone College ) singled through the left side of the infield.

Jonathan Santiago (Arlington, Tx / Bowie HS ) laid down a suicide squeeze bunt to the pitcher, easily scoring Hagstrom.

The Lions, who were outhit by the Rams, 8-7, had two runners on base with one out in the fifth.

Brock Schneider (Arlington, Tx / Martin HS ) lined a single to right-center and Tallon Ralstin (Cortez, Colo / Cortez HS ) followed by punching a hit to leftfield. The next two batters were retired on a flies hit to the right side.

Wesleyan took advantage of four walks and three extra-base hits to gradually pull away. Jonathan Bravo went 2-for-4 and scored three times and designated hitter Dakota Lee drove in three runs.

Lions’ ace Jarrod Pisors (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) absorbed the loss. He scattered eight hits and was responsible for five runs, all earned.

The 6’7 sophomore, now 3-3, struck out six and walked four.

Pisors got a dozen batters to ground out, five to shortstop Preston Hornbeck (McKinney, Tx / Heston JC ). Outfielders caught five balls, with the remaining 22 outs made in the infield.

Three relievers combined to yield no hits over the last two innings, though five walks led to the final two runs.

SAGU’s seven hits came from different players; Raul Castro (Garland, Tx / Hillsdale College ), Matthew Scheaffer (Crockett, Tx / Howard Payne Univ ), Hagstrom, Hornbeck, Mathis, Schneider and Ralstin.

Stat Leaders as Lions approach Mid-Season

Statistical leaders through 23 games, senior Jared Denton (Mission, Tx / Sharyland HS ) continues to pace the team with a .394 batting average.

Five Lions have reached double figures in scoring runs; Denton and Hagstrom with 14 runs, Santiago at 13, Clay Gentle (Fredericksburg, Tx / Fredericksbrg HS ) 12 and Hornbeck with 10.

Four players are bunched at the top in runs batted in (RBI); Santiago and Hornbeck with 11 apiece, and 10 each from Denton and Ralstin.
