Waxahachie, Texas- The official kick-off to the 2014 Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) women’s soccer team is days away.  The lady Lions have spent the first few weeks conditioning, running drills, and working hard to get ahead of the competition after a disappointing season in 2013.

2013 Co-captain Daniella Ramirez returns for her senior year Last year the lady Lions ended with a record of 2-16. According to head coach Mandy Fortner attacking the goal should come easier this year, “We struggled a lot last year offensively, so all of the recruiting we did this year was geared towards attacking/offensive players.  We pulled in 4 or 5 center mids that will be really great for us.”

With the excitement of the new freshmen, there’s a handful of returning upperclassman to provide leadership.  2013 team co-captains seniors Amy Lambdin and Daniella Ramirez will be back on the roster.  Senior goalkeeper Amber Belisle will also be a returning player to watch.

Last year’s strength was the defense and two returners will once again be in the Lion’s back line, Junior Gloria Lozano and sophomore Kaylie Cox.

Center midfieler Mariah Sanchez will be back on the field for the 2014 seasonCenter mid Mariah Sanchez and her strong outside shot will also return after having to sit out the 2013 season.  The center midfield position should be a strength for this year’s team according to Coach Fortner, “We have a lot of new girls that will be playing there and we have depth at our bench.  They’re just real smart players and real calm with the ball at their feet.”

In the newly released Sooner Athletic Conference preseason poll, the SAGU women’s soccer team landed at the bottom of the list.  Coach Fortner has more faith in her girls than that, she thinks this is the year for a turnaround, “I really have high expectations for this season.  There will be a lot of competition for that starting position.  We haven’t had that in the past so this year will be a little different.  I’m really excited.”

The women’s soccer home season will kick off August 29, 2014 when SAGU hosts Southwestern College at 2pm.  The Lions will play their first conference game on September 26, 2014 when Mid-America Christian comes to town.
