FORT WORTH, Texas -- It was a typical effort by the women’s soccer team from Southwestern Assemblies of God University tonight (Sat.) in Cowtown.
Consistent, focused and fueled by their defense. The trademarks of a Mandy Fortner coached team were all fully present.
The only thing missing is offensive finishers, evidenced by the squad’s eleventh shutout in a 2-0 loss at Texas Wesleyan University.
The setback gives SAGU a 2-15 overall mark, while their ledger in the Sooner Athletic Conference slipped to 0-9.
Wesleyan is now 11-4-2 and 5-4-1 in the SAC. The 5th place Lady Rams snapped a two game skid. Three of their four losses this fall have been in overtime.
The Lady Lions blanked the Ewes for the first 35 minutes. That’s when Wesleyan Jessica Watton, thanks to a Zamora Brown assist, found the back of the net for the only goal TWU would need at 35:02.
It was the 13th goal of the season for the 5’4 senior from Royal Oak, Michigan.
SAGU remained within a score of tying the favored Rams until the 74th minute.
Wesleyan iced things when the two players who collaborated on the first tally reversed their roles. Brown got the score with Watton assisting.
Brown, who is fourth on their team in goals, has now registered six.
The Lady Lions were outshot 24-5, though the Rams fired just nine on goal.
The Purple Pride was credited with three shots on goal; by senior Noelle Pugliese (Lee's Summit, Mo / Lee's Summit North HS), junior Amy Lambdin (Stockton, Cal / JIm Elliot Christian HS) and junior Amber Belisle (Roseville, Cal / Whitney HS).
Two of the team’s up-and-comers, sophomore Justine Lopez (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) and freshman Madi Thornley (Flower Mound, Tx / Marcus HS), both fired a shot.
SAGU had two bang-bang chances for the equallizer late in the half. Belisle (bah-LIE-yul) ripped a shot from 18 yards that the keeper, Nikki Lockwood, deflected.
Lambdin was there for the rebound. She triggered a blast that Lockwood snared to silence the 'Cats.
Junior goalie Haley Shingleton (Deer Park, Tx / Deer Park HS) took the loss in spite of making seven saves.
SAGU will wrap up the 2013 campaign on Monday at home. At 12 noon they will entertain Oklahoma City University (12-4 / 8-1 in SAC).
The No. 20 ranked Lady Stars need to win to clinch the SAC regular season championship. John Brown University (12-3-1 / 7-1-1 SAC) is one half-game behind OKCU.
The Stars topped the Golden Eagles, 1-0, with a score in the 72nd minute earlier this season.
