Junior netminder makes 20 saves against Bison

Lady Lions play locally on Saturday at Northwood

SHAWNEE, Oklahoma  --  Junior goalie Haley Shingleton (Deer Park, Tx / Deer Park HS) continued her amazing run of saves for Southwestern Assemblies of God University’s women’s soccer team. She racked up 20 on Tuesday night in a 4-0 loss at Oklahoma Baptist University.

As the last line of defense, the goal-keeper thwarted what could have been a larger number of goals. She denied an OBU team that has won five of their past six games.

Shingleton has reached double-figures in saves in five of her seven games and has averaged 18 in the last four. Not only is she very capable, but the team’s lack of offense has the squad on their heels playing defense for most of the time.

Forty miles east of Oklahoma City, Shingleton kept SAGU in the game until a pair of late goals clinched it for the Bison.

OBU outshot the Lady Lions 42-5, including 25-3 in shots on goal.

SAGU’s junior "Golden Bears," Amber Belisle (Roseville, Cal / Whitney HS) and Amy Lambdin (Stockton, Cal / Elliot Christian) combined for all of the Pride’s shots on goal. Belisle (bah-LIE-yul) managed two, both on target.

Noelle Pugliese (Lee’s Summit, Mo / LS North HS), Ashley Nop (Stockton, Cal / Lincoln HS) and Lambdin all had one attempt.

The Bison scored twice in ninety seconds midway through the first half, for a 2-0 lead. Their other tallies came in the 73rd and 87th minutes after peppering Shingleton throughout.

Mackenzie Bruton and Lauren Lartigue each scored for OBU, firing eight and seven shots respectively.

SAGU, who has fielded their best team yet, slipped to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. It was their seventh successive setback during which they have been outscored 17-1.

The Bison improved to 7-5 in all games and are 5-1 in the SAC. The nationally ranked team is a half game behind front-running Oklahoma City University (9-3 / 5-0), whom SAGU will host in the season finale.

The team’s defense and midfield play continues to shine. It has also been their saving grace. In four SAC games they have yet to score but have yielded just eight goals.

They return to the pitch this Saturday at 1:00pm in nearby Cedar Hill (25 miles northwest of Waxahachie). They will take on Northwood University.
