Women's Soccer Summer Update:
Five new players commit to Lady Lions
Team to introduce new uniform, expanded coverage
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University women’s soccer team will report to camp in less than 50 days.
Facing new competition in the Sooner Athletic Conference along with a tougher schedule, Head Coach Mandy Fortner will begin preseason camp with over 25 players. Entering her third year at the helm the former college All-American continues to lead the Lady Lions upwards.
When last seen the team was finishing the 2012 campaign by going 5-3-1 in the stretch run. SAGU’s 6-11-1 record was their best in their brief history.
SAGU was the only NAIA team in the nation last year to have any of their games aired on-line in high definition. SAGU Sports Live televised two home matches.
When the new broadcast itinerary is released later this summer the line-up could very well include up to four games. The Lady Lions have 18 dates on the calendar, eight of them on their 120-yard by 80-yard campus pitch.
The Purple Pride will play host to several big match-ups. The top two teams from the Sooner Athletic Conference will visit Waxahachie.
No. 10 ranked Oklahoma City University (20-2) travels to SAGU on Saturday, September 28. The league runner-up, the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma (USAO), comes to town a month later on October 29.
Our Lady of the Lake University will offer a special challenge on Sept. 20. The front-running Lady Saints were 5-0 in the Red River Athletic Conference when SAGU stunned them, 1-0, in San Antonio in 2012.
The Halos have gone 57-23-9 in the past five years and will figure to be a litmus test in the Lady Lions’ third home contest this season.
The Lady Lions, who wear all-white uniforms at home, will add new road outfits this season. With dark grey as the base color for purple and gold, the new threads are being produced by Nike.
Fortner expects fourteen newcomers, including recruits and walk-ons, when players convene on Monday, August 12.
That list contains new commits Cheri and Keri Armstrong, from New Mexico; Angelina Bickley, a goal-keeper from Utah; Toddy Hess, of Utah and Ashley Nop, who calls California home. Their details are expected this summer.
The Class of 2013 recruiting class, as previously posted on-line, includes;
Witney Burns (San Antonio, Tx / Warren HS), MF
Kaylie Cox (Midlothian, Tx / Midlothian HS), Def
Sharaya Eiland (Quinlan, Tx / Ford HS), MF-Def
Kathleen Espinosa (Corpus Christi, Tx / King HS), GK

Kristen Lambdin (Stockton, Cal / Elliot Christian), Def
Kaylee Perry (Krum, Tx / Krum HS), F

Many members of the team will participate in a weeklong outreach in the South Texas rural community of Leakey (pronounced LAY-kee) the week before camp opens, starting on Aug. 5.
