SAGU plays 17 games, 10 of them away

Home match-ups offer great action for fans

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The Southwestern Assemblies of God University women’s soccer team has released their 2013 schedule. It includes 17 games, ten of them on the road.

This will be the Lady Lions first season in the Sooner Athletic Conference, and includes ten league games. Half of them will be played at the team’s on-campus pitch, which is located adjacent to the Sheaffer Center.

Third year Head Coach Mandy Fortner’s team will have their work cut out for them down the stretch, so they will need a good start. Five of their final six opponents had winning marks in 2012

Of the team’s seven home tilts, only two are against teams with a losing record. Combined, foes who venture to Waxahachie have a .524 winning percentage (57-49-6 won-lost-tied).

Soccer fans can catch some great action in high-quality match-ups in the Lady Lions home itinerary.

The first contest in on the first day of school, September 4, against Johnson & Wales University. From Denver, the Wildcats will be playing in their inaugural season in the NAIA.

The next two foes, Our Lady of the Lake University (9-9-1) and Oklahoma City University (20-2), are on tap with Sept. 20 and 28 visits to ‘Hachie.

Last year SAGU stunned the Lady Saints, 1-0, with a goal in the 89th minute. OLLU was 5-0 in the RRAC at the time. The OKC Stars shutout 16 teams in 2012 and climbed to No. 5 in the nation by the end of the regular season.

Three others are on the slate in October; Wayland Baptist University (8-9-1) on the 12th, then John Brown University (9-6-2) on the 24th, before closing with Science & Arts (11-7-1) on the 29th.

The regular season concludes on November 2 when St. Gregory's University (0-16-1) comes to town.

When out of town, Lady Lions opposition has a collective .505 winning percentage (90-83-11 record). Five of the ten teams SAGU will face on the road had winning records.

Fans can follow SAGU to a few of their Texas road games; at Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton on Sept. 14. Then they tangle with the University of Houston at Victoria on Sept. 25.

SAGU has two dates within 45 minutes of campus; in Cedar Hill against Northwood University on Oct. 19 and in Ft. Worth when they clash with Texas Wesleyan University on Oct. 25.

Games against Mary Hardin-Baylor and Louisiana College are teams from the NCAA’s Division 3.

The Lady Lions travel 375 miles to Kansas for a pair of season-opening matches on August 28-29.

Team Purple has Southwestern College and Sterling College on the menu. Both the Moundbuilders and the Warriors defeated SAGU with identical 2-1 scores last fall.

Coach Fortner’s 2013 team will have as many new players as they do returning veterans. The challenging schedule will provide plenty of opportunities to prove themselves.

The Lady Lions will have a pair of senior midfielders who figure to be cogs in the wheel.

Natalie Pena (Dallas, Tx / Union HS, Tulsa, Ok), with seven career goals and six assists, and Noelle Pugliese (Lee's Summit, Mo / Lee's Summit North HS) return.

She has booted eight goals and is credited with four helpers in her three seasons in purple.

Amy Lambdin (Stockton, CA / Elliot Christian HS), a junior this autumn, led a balanced scoring attack last year with six goals and two assists. Pugliese was next with five and four, respectively.

Pena (PAIN-ya) and Pugliese (PUG-lees) each registered four assists in 2012.

A team preview will appear prior to the start of the season in August.
