Women's Soccer roll to 8-0 rout

Pugliese, Belisle, Davila each score twice

Lady Lions host Northwood on Thursday

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The Southwestern Assemblies of God University women’s soccer team broke into the win column on Monday with an 8-0 rout of Dallas Christian College.

Erupting for seven goals in one half was a much-needed tonic for the Lady Lions. The young team has struggled to find the net in the opening weeks of the season. But not today.

SAGU fired 35 shots at the Crusaders net, some coming off of six cornerkicks. Five different players scored goals and four others registered points on assists.

The squad played their best game of the season on Saturday, controlling the pace and outshooting the University of Houston-Victoria (4-3 record) by an 18-9 count.

Though they did not win, falling 1-0, it did not take away from their progress.

They built on that performance with today's jail-break goal-fest.

Junior forward Noelle Pugliese (Lee’s Summit, Mo / Lee’s Summit North HS), sophomore forward Amber Belisle (Roseville, Cal / Whitney HS) and freshman Audrea Davila (Grand Prairie, Tx / South GP HS) led the scoring parade with two goals apiece.

For Pugliese (pug-LEES), it was her sixth career goal.

Jessica Powell-Roman (Terrell, Tx / Terrell HS) and Lyndi Garrison (Hastings, Mich / Thornapple Kellogg HS) added solo goals.

Powell-Roman, a senior defender, is known for her leadership, playing skills on the back line and for possessing perhaps the team’s most powerful leg.

Her tally was the first of her career.

Another feel-good story was Garrison. The genial junior with a 24-7 smile was forced to miss last season while she rehabbed from an injury. In 2010 she was the team’s leading scorer.

Her goal was her first since the end of that campaign.

Players who assisted on scoring plays were sophomore Gloria Lozano (El Paso, Tx / Socorro HS) and freshman McKina Michael (Plano, Tx / West HS). The defenders each had two helpers.

Amy Lambdin (Stockton, Cal / Elliot Christian), a sophomore, and a frosh – Justine Lopez (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS), both accounted for a solo assist.

The eight goals were the most by SAGU since August 25, 2010, when they fired 13 against Dallas Christian.

Upcoming SAGU Slate

Southwestern (1-6) will begin league play in the Red River Athletic Conference this week with a pair of home matches.
