Soccer doubleheader at home on Sat/Mon

SAGU plays host to pair of Kansas teams

Lady Lions, Lions seek rebound from MACU loss

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Labor Day Weekend for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Southwestern Assemblies of God University will feature a pair of home doubleheaders on Saturday and Monday afternoons. Both twinbills will be against teams from Kansas.

Tomorrow, September 1, SAGU will tangle with Sterling College, the Lady Lions at 1:00pm (CST), and the Lions at 3:00pm. The games will take place on the campus pitch where admission is free to the general public.

Both squads will entertain Southwestern College on Labor Day. The Lady Lions get started at 11:00am, followed by the men at 1:00pm.

Lady Lions Update:

Sterling shutout Central Christian College this week, 3-0, and played Dallas Christian College today. The Lady Warriors posted a 7-10 mark last fall, scoring 27 and yielding 33 goals.

The last time the two schools met was in 2008, in Sterling, with the hosts staking claim to a 5-1 triumph.

SAGU has played once so far in this young season, a 5-0 road loss to Mid-America Christian University on August 24. They scrimmaged Hill College on Tuesday and held their own against the Lady Rebels.

Sophomore keeper Amber Belisle (Sacramento, Ca / Whitney HS) (bah-LIE-yul) was outstanding in the net, making several acrobatic saves.

The play of the match, however, came from SAGU senior defender Jessica Powell (Terrell, Tx / Terrell HS). She uncorked a shot from the edge of the circle, nearly 40 yards out.

The laser, resembling a bazooka with a silencer, appeared to surprise the goalie as it cleared defenders, and finally, a leaping keeper.

Powell’s powerful blast carried to the crossbar where it hit and bounced down, almost clearing the line. The ball then spun out into the box, but not out of harm’s way for Hill College.

Another Californian, Amy Lambdin (Stockton, Ca / Elliot Christian HS) crashed through and banged home the rebound for a Lady Lion score.

Lions Report:

The Lions are also 0-1, dropping a surprising double-overtime game to MACU. They had controlled play for upwards of 80% of the game. But not finishing key scoring opportunities came back to haunt SAGU.

This week they played an entertaining exhibition against Hill College. Both clubs played their bench and were pleased at various elements of their performance.

Three forwards - Danny Martinez (Houston, Tx / Cy-Creek HS), Parker Sturgeon (Bartlesville, Ok / Bartlesville HS) and newly activated Robert Ambrosie (Iasi, Romania / Wurmbrand HS) all booted scoring kicks for Southwestern.

SAGU will meet Sterling on Saturday. The Warriors, 3-14-1 last season, went up against Dallas Christian today, though results had yet to be reported on-line when this article was uploaded.

Sterling routed the Lions in their most recent meeting, 6-1, in 2008. The Warriors were 10-7 during that campaign.

Monday’s foe, Southwestern College, has their first game on Saturday against Dallas Christian. The Jinx was 5-13 in 2011.

SAGU and SC have met three times since 2008, with the visitor coming away with a victory each time. The Jinx took 2-1 (2010) and 1-0 (2008) triumphs in Waxahachie, sandwiching a 3-1 SAGU conquest (2009).
