Red Oak defender commits to SAGU
Justine Lopez is latest Lady Lions signee
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Southwestern Assemblies of God University has announced the signing of Justine Lopez to the Lady Lions women’s soccer team.
A 5-foot-4 senior defender at neighboring Red Oak High School, she penned her commitment on a binding National Letter of Intent, and SAGU's second year Head Coach Mandy Fortner couldn’t be happier.
“Justine is going to be a strong addition to our back line this fall,” Coach Fortner said. “She has great size, speed and field vision.”
“In addition to her athletic ability,” she added, “Justine has a big heart and a desire to excel academically and spiritually. She will be a great fit for our program and I am excited to have her.”
Justine is the daughter of Joe and Julie Lopez.
Her cousin, Audrea Davila (Grand Prairie, Tx / South Grand Prairie HS), just signed with SAGU. Together, they were teammates on the Dallas Texans ’94 Red South club team under coach Gabriel Adamas.
Lopez played for Coach Laurie Norrell at Red Oak H.S., where she received Honorable Mention All-District in 2010-11 as well as 2nd Team All-District (Class 4A) during her senior campaign. While sporting the maroon and white as a Red Oak Lady Hawk, she garnered their Defensive Player of the Year award as a senior.
The Hawks had another successful season, advancing to the fifth round in the Region II state playoffs.
After earning a first round bye, they crushed the (Dallas) Adamson H.S. Leopards by a 9-0 count before ousting the Ennis Lions in a 3-1 decision.
Their next triumph came against the Panthers of Mabank H.S., who had scored 15 goals in their first three playoff victories. Red Oak caged the ‘Cats, 4-2, in Forney, Texas.
Red Oak finally met their match in the Regional Quarterfinals at Carrollton’s Standridge Stadium.
There, the Carrollton Creekview (19-4-4) Mustangs, who had limited four foes to a single goal, blanked the Hawks by a 4-0 count.
The Lady Hawks’ final record this spring was 17-8-1. They compete in District 28 – 4A, where they annually do battle with their rivals from Waxahachie High School (20-3-3).
About SAGU Women's Soccer
SAGU is entering their seventh season of existence. After finishing 'on the rise' last year, the first under coach Fortner, they plan to carry-over momentum and promise.
The team’s 4-14-1 record was their best yet, and their continued competitive play has given optimism for the 2012 campaign.
The squad, who play their matches on a campus pitch considered one of, if not the best in the Red River Athletic Conference. Fifteen institutions in four states are RRAC members, 11 of them fielding women’s soccer teams this fall.
SAGU is a Division I dual member of both the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).
A year ago the Lady Lions won a thrilling 5-4 shootout after a double-overtime scoreless tie against Central Baptist College (Ark) in the NCCAA’s Central Regional. It gave SAGU a two-game win streak, coupled with a 1-0 blanking of Huston-Tillotson University the previous game.
The team expects the return of seniors Natalie Pena (Dallas, Tx / Tulsa, OK Union HS), who tied as the team’s scoring leader, and midfielder Jessica Powell (Terrell, Tx / Terrell HS), as well as sophomore defender Gloria Lozano (El Paso, Tx / Faith Christian) and second-year goalie Haley Shingleton (Pasadena, Tx / Deer Park HS). Each are expected to be key performers during the team's 18-game season.
Several other veteran players will unite with them to form one of, if not SAGU's most experienced women's soccer team yet.
SAGU fans will be able to follow all of the home action via LiveStats, an on-line digital version of the game’s play-by-play. This free service will allow access for family and friends to keep their finger on the pulse of events as they happen.
Plus, starting this autumn, the SAGU Sports Network will broadcast a pair of home matches. Airing the livestream in high definition, SAGU is considered the best and only NAIA school to offer such quality broadcasts. Computers, laptops, iPads, iPhones and other apps can connect to SAGUtv on the internet.
The Lady Lions will also unveil new home uniforms. They are expected to be white with purple pinstripes.
