This Just In: SAGU wins 74-63
A full report on the game will be posted tonight. Hawkins scores 28 as the Lady Lions advance to Friday night's semi-finals.
WINONA LAKE, Indiana -- Led by the hot hand of senior point guard Stephanie Hawkins (DeSoto, Tx / DeSoto HS), the Southwestern Assemblies of God University holds a 39-30 lead over Tennessee's King College at halftime. The Lions shot 58% in the first half.
Hawkins knocked down four critical baskets in the final ten minutes of the half to give the Lady Lions their biggest lead, 39-26, in the closing seconds of the half. After SAGU jumped to an 8-0 start, the Lady Tornado climbed back into the game, trailing 13-7.
Hawk drilled a 3-pointer to make it 16-7. Later, with Heather Jefferson (Conroe, Tx / Conroe HS) inbounding and only three seconds left on the 30-second shot-clock, Hawkeye had an eagle-eye from 25-feet, listing the top-seeded Lions to a 25-16 lead. After a nifty inside spin-move gave Jirah Rodriguez (Georgetown, Tx / Georgetown HS) a basket (29-18), Hawkins added a twisting, 8-foot jumper.
SAGU's 2-3 zone produced two turnovers in the waning minutes. Rachel Harris (Joshua, Tx / Bethesda Christian) picked off one, then triggered a fast break, finishing with a pass to Jefferson for a layup. 36-24.
Chelsea Jones (San Antonio, Tx / Cornerstone Christian), who only took a few shots in the first half (4 points), made a defensive steal in the backcourt. She tipped the ball to Harris, who quickly gave it back to Jones, who, in turn spotted Hawkins on the backside for an easy deuce.
After a late basket cut the deficit to 39-28, Hawkins turned the ball over, resulting in a breakaway layup for King with four seconds remaining.
Hawkins and Jefferson played large in the opening twenty minutes for SAGU. Rodriguez did as well, but drew her third personal foul with 3:40 to go.
The Lady Lions hurt themselves with 12 first half turnovers and missed some free throws that could've insured a larger lead.
